Apple has announced an accessibility feature that significantly expands the subtitle logic on the iPhone: In iOS 27, personal videos will automatically be captioned – regardless of whether they were recorded by the user, received from friends, or streamed online. An on-device speech recognition model handles the process directly on the device.
As part of its annual Accessibility Preview, Apple has announced a bundle of new features for 2026, one of which is particularly far-reaching: automatic captions for every personal video. Until now, captions in iOS were primarily available for professionally produced content. With iOS 27, Apple is expanding this to include everyday videos – a step that will make the system significantly more accessible for deaf and hard-of-hearing users. The announcement comes amidst the anticipation surrounding WWDC 2026, where Apple will officially unveil its next software generations in early June.
On-device model for three video sources
The feature is based on a new speech recognition model that runs entirely on the device. If a video doesn't yet have subtitles, iOS automatically generates them from the spoken audio. Apple defines three use cases in which the function applies:
- Videos recorded directly with the iPhone
- Videos received from family and friends
- Videos that are streamed online
This means that iOS 27 covers content from the user's own media library as well as shared and online videos. Previously, users had to rely on subtitles provided by the video provider or use external apps.
Privacy and customization
Apple clearly prioritizes local processing. Subtitles are generated exclusively on the device; sending audio data to external servers is not planned. This architecture follows the pattern Apple has recently established for other Apple Intelligence features: speech recognition remains on the iPhone.
Apple offers flexibility in displaying subtitles. The appearance can be adjusted either directly in the video's playback menu or centrally in the system settings. This allows you to customize font size, background, and colors to your personal preferences.
Initial launch in only two countries
Apple has set a significant limitation regarding language support at launch: Automatic subtitles will initially only appear in English and are regionally restricted to the US and Canada. For German-speaking regions, this means the feature will not be available with the iOS 27 release. Apple has not provided a timeline for additional languages; the typical Apple rollout of additional localizations usually occurs in subsequent updates.
Cross-platform rollout
Auto-captions are not an iOS-only feature. Apple announces support for the entire ecosystem:
- iPhone (iOS 27)
- iPad (iPadOS 27)
- Mac (macOS 27)
- Apple TV (tvOS 27)
- Apple Vision Pro (visionOS 27)
The unified versioning of operating systems has been firmly established at Apple since last year's change in naming scheme logic. The details and precise implementation Apple plans for each platform are likely to be part of the WWDC presentation.
To be unveiled at WWDC 2026
Apple will unveil iOS 27 and the other platforms during the WWDC keynote on Monday, June 8, 2026, at 10:00 AM Pacific Time (7:00 PM CEST). The conference traditionally also sees the release of the first developer betas, so further details on functionality and exact behavior can be expected in the coming weeks.
The advance announcement of accessibility features is part of a long-standing Apple tradition: Every year in May – around Global Accessibility Awareness Day – the company provides a preview of upcoming assistive technologies before they are presented in the broader software context at WWDC.
