Apple has released new firmware for the Magic Keyboards designed for the iPad Pro and iPad Air. Such updates are infrequent but significant because they can improve the interaction between the keyboard and iPad in the background. Officially, Apple remains tight-lipped about details, as usual, but the new version numbers and affected models are clear.
The Magic Keyboard does a lot of things quietly in the background. Firmware updates are infrequent, there's no separate update function, and you usually only notice something when you specifically check.
Apple releases new firmware for iPad Pro and iPad Air Magic Keyboards
Which firmware Apple has released
Apple has rolled out two firmware updates, depending on which Magic Keyboard is used:
- Firmware version 0750.0220.0304 is now available for the Magic Keyboard of iPad Pro models with M4 or M5 chipsets. This is an improvement over the previous version 0680.0220.0301.
- The firmware version for the Magic Keyboard, which Apple sells for the iPad Air with M3, is 0400.0140.0303. This is an improvement over the previous version 0350.0135.0303.
For which Magic Keyboard variants is the update available?
The new firmware is released for several specific variants:
- It is available for the 11-inch version of the Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro, as sold by Apple for the M4 and M5 iPad Pro models.
- It is also available for the 13-inch Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro, as well as for the M4 and M5 models.
- And it is available for the Magic Keyboard that Apple offers for the iPad Air with M3.
Background: The redesigned Magic Keyboard since May 2024
Apple redesigned the Magic Keyboard in May 2024, coinciding with the launch of the M4 iPad Pro. The basic design remained the same: the familiar floating cantilever design, where the iPad appears to sit "in the air" in front of the keyboard.
Nevertheless, there were changes that are noticeable in everyday use. The updated version has a dedicated row of function keys. Additionally, the trackpad has grown and is now made of glass. This makes the user experience feel closer to that of a laptop, especially when it comes to gestures and precise pointing and clicking.
How to install the firmware update
Firmware updates for the Magic Keyboard are infrequent, and Apple offers no way to manually initiate or download them separately. Installation happens automatically.
The update will install when the Magic Keyboard is connected to an iPad Pro that is connected to the internet. No further action is required; the process runs in the background.
This is how you can check the current firmware version
You can check which firmware is currently running on the Magic Keyboard directly in the iPad settings. Here's how:
- Settings
- Generally
- info
- Magic Keyboard
The firmware version of the connected Magic Keyboard is displayed there.
