iOS 27 promises to be a major software update for Apple's ecosystem. The focus will be on a comprehensive overhaul of Siri and improvements to the user interface, particularly the so-called Liquid Glass design. These changes are expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2026.

Apple has been working for some time to improve the quality of its software while simultaneously relying more heavily on modern AI technologies. The next generation of operating systems is intended to reflect precisely this approach. In addition to new features, the focus is primarily on better integration, greater stability, and more control over system design.

Apple's focus on software quality and AI

In recent years, Apple has increasingly focused on modernizing its software infrastructure. Particularly in the area of artificial intelligence, the pressure is mounting to keep pace with other major technology companies.

With iOS 27, Apple is responding to this trend. The update is intended not only to bring new features but also to improve and stabilize existing systems. According to reports, WWDC 2026 will therefore focus heavily on software quality and optimization.

A key component of this strategy is the long-awaited comprehensive modernization of Siri. At the same time, Apple is working to further develop and make its Liquid Glass design system more flexible.

Siri overhaul: The "Campo" project

The biggest new feature in iOS 27 is the long-awaited overhaul of Siri. Apple reportedly originally planned to introduce this update earlier in developer betas, for example with iOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe, or iPadOS 26.4.

Since the new features have not yet appeared in the current developer builds, WWDC in June 2026 is now considered the most likely time for the official unveiling.

Internally, the new Siri version is codenamed "Campo".

The redesign primarily includes a new user interface. This is intended to be more closely aligned with modern chatbots. Instead of the previous classic Siri interface, the design will now be more similar to systems like ChatGPT or Claude.

This makes the interaction with the voice assistant more dialogue-oriented and closer to modern AI conversation systems.

Integration of Google Gemini technology

A key component of the new Siri generation is the use of modern AI models. Apple plans to integrate models based on Google Gemini technology.

In January, an agreement was signed stipulating that Apple would use these models as the basis for its own Apple Foundation Models. These models form the technical foundation for the new Siri experience. This integration is expected to enable several improvements:

  • more powerful speech processing
  • Improved handling of complex queries
  • more modern AI-supported functions within the system

However, the collaboration with Google is expensive. Reports indicate that this technology will cost Apple around one billion US dollars annually.

Siri across the entire Apple ecosystem

The revamped Siri version won't just be available on the iPhone. Apple plans to integrate it across multiple platforms. The new AI experience is expected to appear on the following systems, among others:

  • iOS 27
  • iPadOS
  • macOS

This is intended to make Siri function more uniformly across the entire Apple ecosystem. Features and AI capabilities will be consistently available across multiple devices.

Improvements to the liquid glass design

In addition to AI modernization, Apple is also working on further developing its design system. An important component of this is Liquid Glass, a visual surface with glass-like effects.

This design was first introduced with iOS 26 and has since shaped various areas of the user interface. With iOS 27, Apple is apparently planning a significant enhancement: the intensity of the glass effect will be adjustable.

System-wide controller for the glass effect

According to reports, Apple is working on a system-wide slider that will allow users to adjust the intensity of the Liquid Glass effect. This will make it possible to determine how prominent the glass-like appearance is within the user interface. The slider is expected to affect several system areas, including:

  • App folder
  • Navigation bars
  • the home screen
  • other elements of the user interface

This customization option gives the system significantly more flexibility in its visual appearance.

Technical challenges in implementation

Part of this idea has already been implemented in existing features. One example is the clock on the lock screen, where the glass effect is already being used successfully.

However, technical problems have hindered integration into the entire operating system. According to Bloomberg, these challenges are one reason why the feature has not yet been fully implemented.

However, with the next generation of systems, Apple could solve these problems and make Liquid Glass more flexible system-wide.

Why the new features will only arrive with iOS 27

It is now too late for iOS 26 to integrate major changes such as the new Siri version or the expanded Liquid Glass controls.

Current developments therefore suggest that these functions will only become fully available with the 27th generation of Apple's operating systems.

Users of the upcoming system version are therefore expected to benefit from both the new Siri technology and the expanded design options.

Siri, AI and Liquid Glass: What's behind iOS 27

iOS 27 could be one of the most significant Apple updates in the coming years. The planned overhaul of Siri will bring a more modern user interface, stronger AI integration, and a closer connection to Apple's Foundation models.

At the same time, Apple is working to make the user interface more flexible with improved Liquid Glass controls. A system-wide slider for the intensity of the glass effect should allow for more control over the system's design.

Together with the focus on software quality and system optimization, a clear strategy emerges: Apple wants to modernize its software platform, focus more on AI, and simultaneously improve the user experience across the entire ecosystem.

The official unveiling of these new features is expected to take place during WWDC 2026. There, Apple is likely to demonstrate in detail for the first time how iOS 27 will usher in the next stage of Apple software development. (Image: Shutterstock / Alex Malt)
