The iMac is one of Apple's most popular desktop computers and has undergone significant technical and visual changes in recent years. Since the switch to Apple Silicon chips in 2021, performance has been a primary focus of regular improvements. However, much of the design has remained unchanged.

A new report suggests that Apple is planning further changes to the color palette in the next iMac update. This could mean the device receives a visual refresh later this year.

Since the iMac's redesign in 2021, Apple has updated the chip inside the device twice. The iMac's colors, however, have only been updated once.

The current iMac features modern Apple processors and a colorful design. Reports indicate that Apple may now be revisiting the colors and introducing a new color palette with the next update.

The current iMac with M4 chip

The current iMac was introduced in October 2024 and uses the M4 chip. The device is currently available in seven color options:

  • Blue
  • Purple
  • Pink
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Silver

These colors are part of the M4 generation. However, they are adapted versions of the colors already used in the original M1 iMac.

It's also interesting that Apple skipped the M2 chip in the iMac. A version with the M3 chip was released directly after the M1 model. However, the colors of the M3 iMac remained unchanged.

Report on new iMac colors

According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is planning an updated color palette for the next iMac update. In his "Power On" newsletter, he reports that the iMac is expected to be released in new colors "later this year."

It's still unclear whether Apple will introduce completely new colors or simply adjust existing ones. Both options are possible, as Apple has made similar changes in the past.

Possible new processors

In addition to the colors, the iMac's processor could also be updated. Currently, the device uses the M4 chip.

Apple already uses the newer M5 chip in other devices like the MacBook Air. Therefore, a switch to the M5 chip in the next iMac would be conceivable. Alternatively, Apple could postpone the update and equip the iMac with the future M6 chip.

Experiments with larger iMac models

In the same report, Gurman also explains that Apple continues to experiment with iMac models featuring more powerful processors and larger displays.

However, these developments concern potential future high-end devices and not the iMac update, which may be released later this year.

Apple is apparently planning new colors for the iMac

The iMac has received several technical updates since 2021, while its design has changed only slightly. A new color palette could now give the device a visual refresh.

Whether the new iMac will feature an M5 or M6 chip alongside new colors is currently unknown. However, it is clear that Apple continues to work on the iMac's development, keeping both design and performance in mind. (Image: Apple)
