Affordable MacBook coming: Price and details

Just before next week's "Apple Experience," further details about a more affordable MacBook have emerged. Apple is expected to unveil up to five new products, with the new entry-level notebook being one of the highlights. The information comes from the supply chain and paints a fairly concrete picture of the timeline, production, features, colors, and price range.

The term MacBook isn't new to Apple, but the potential direction is. Apple already used the name "MacBook" (without "Air" or "Pro") from 2006 to 2012 and again from 2015 to 2019. However, these devices all ran on Intel processors. Now, everything points to an entry-level "MacBook" with Apple's own silicon being introduced for the first time. And that's precisely what makes the announcement exciting, because it could create a new, significantly more affordable category within the Mac product line.

New information from the supply chain: Market launch in March

According to supply chain sources who spoke with DigiTimes, the entry-level MacBook is indeed expected to be released in March. The same report states that shipments of the laptop to Apple are slated to begin as early as next month.

Production and assembly: Quanta first, Foxconn later

According to the report, Quanta Computer is slated to be the primary assembly plant. Foxconn is expected to join production later. This suggests that Apple is initially relying heavily on Quanta and will then expand its capacity accordingly.

Timeline postponed: Mass production not until the first quarter of 2026

Originally, mass production was planned to begin at the end of 2025. However, according to DigiTimes, this timeline has been postponed to the first quarter of 2026. The report refers to this as a shift in planning, without providing further details on a single trigger.

Question: Is $599 probably too optimistic?

DigiTimes assumes that higher prices are difficult to avoid. The reason given is rising component costs, specifically exploding prices for DRAM and NAND memory chips.

Early estimates suggested a starting price of $599 for the new MacBook in the US. However, according to the report, it's quite possible that the starting price will instead be $699 or even $799.

Additionally, it is mentioned that students will receive a discount of $100 on the regular price in the Apple Education Store online.

Presentation without livestream: Hands-on on March 4th

The media will have the opportunity to try out the more affordable MacBook on Wednesday, March 4th, at 9 a.m. Eastern Time (3 p.m. EMZ) as part of the „Apple Experience“ events in New York, London and Shanghai.

Important: There will be no live stream of this Apple event. The announcement of the new MacBook is expected to be made via press release.

Design and positioning: MacBook Air look, but with stripped-down specs

Visually, the cheaper MacBook will likely look more or less like a MacBook Air, albeit with reduced specifications. This fits its expected role as an entry-level model.

Chip, display, RAM and ports: This is probably what's inside

A key point is the processor: Instead of an M-series chip, the device is expected to be powered by the A18 Pro, the same chip found in the iPhone 16 Pro. Other expected specifications align with this:

  • a slightly smaller 12.9-inch display
  • Based on the A18 Pro specifications, probably only 8 GB of RAM.
  • Standard USB-C ports instead of faster Thunderbolt ports

The bottom line is that it looks like a device that is deliberately designed to be "good enough" for beginners, rather than focused on maximum performance or professional features.

Colors like the iBook: yellow, green, blue and/or pink

The look isn't just about the case design, but also the choice of colors. Similar to the iBook from the early 2000s, the new MacBook is expected to come in "cool" colors, with yellow, green, blue, and/or pink being mentioned. This would be a significantly more playful approach than the current, rather understated MacBook colors.

New MacBook about to launch: Dates, technology and price at a glance

Current indications point to a MacBook launch in March, with production already underway in the supply chain. It will be available to try out for the first time at the "Apple Experience" on March 4th in several cities, without a livestream and presumably only announced via press release. Quanta is expected to handle the main assembly initially, with Foxconn joining later. The production schedule has been pushed back from the end of 2025 to the first quarter of 2026.

Technically, everything seems clearly geared towards the entry-level market: A18 Pro instead of the M-series, 12.9-inch screen, likely 8 GB of RAM, and USB-C instead of Thunderbolt. The price is uncertain, with the originally speculated $599 due to rising DRAM and NAND costs. $699 or $799 seems more realistic, with a $100 education discount for students. The remaining details should be finalized in less than a week. (Image: Shutterstock / guteksk7)
