CarPlay in Teslas: Why it's taking longer

Tesla is still working on integrating CarPlay into its vehicles, according to a recent Bloomberg report. Back in November of last year, the company stated that support could launch "in the coming months", but this has not yet happened.

The new report now provides a concrete explanation for the delay. The focus is on technical compatibility issues and the comparatively slow rollout of iOS 26.

The introduction of CarPlay in Tesla vehicles is not a simple software feature that can be activated quickly. Tesla does not plan to replace its own system with CarPlay. Instead, CarPlay will be integrated as a "window within the broader user interface".

This means that Tesla's own software remains dominant, while CarPlay runs embedded. This parallel use of two systems led to technical challenges.

Tesla continues to work on CarPlay

According to Bloomberg, Tesla is still working on CarPlay support. Mark Gurman's "Power On" newsletter also confirms that the automaker continues to plan the integration and is working closely with Apple. The basic strategy is therefore clear: CarPlay is coming. Only the timing remains uncertain.

Compatibility issues between Apple Maps and Tesla's system

The main reason for the delay lies in the navigation. Tesla uses its own mapping platform, which is also used for autonomous driving functions. At the same time, CarPlay is based on Apple Maps. Several compatibility issues arose here:

  • Tesla's Maps app's turn-by-turn navigation did not sync correctly with Apple Maps during autonomous driving.
  • If both applications were open side by side, different navigation instructions could be displayed.
  • This could potentially have led to confusion for users.

Consistent navigation is crucial, especially for autonomous driving functions. Two different route displays in the same vehicle are considered problematic, particularly when driver assistance systems are active.

Technical changes in iOS 26 and CarPlay

To resolve these issues, Tesla requested technical adjustments to Apple Maps. Apple agreed and implemented the necessary changes in a bug fix update for iOS 26 and in the latest version of CarPlay. This provided the basic technical foundation. However, it also created a new obstacle.

The introduction of iOS 26 as a delay factor

The rollout of iOS 26 was slower than with previous iOS versions. From Tesla's perspective, this meant:

  • By the end of last year, too few users had installed the updated version of iOS 26.
  • Even fewer devices had the specific sub-version that included the CarPlay bug fix.

Apple recently published initial adoption figures: 74 percent of all iPhones released in the last four years are running iOS 26.

However, this number doesn't indicate how many of these devices already have the newer sub-version installed, which includes the relevant adjustments. This is precisely what's crucial for Tesla.

Launching CarPlay without a sufficiently widespread bugfix version would mean that many users would continue to face the known synchronization problems.

Why there is no start date yet

There is currently no concrete date for the introduction of CarPlay in Tesla vehicles. The report suggests that Tesla is likely waiting until the adoption of iOS 26 increases further and the updated version is more widely available. The delay is therefore less related to a lack of development and more to practical implementation in real-world user environments.

Why Tesla is waiting to introduce CarPlay

CarPlay remains a core part of Tesla's software roadmap. Integration is still planned, and the collaboration with Apple continues.

The delay is primarily due to technical compatibility issues between Apple Maps and Tesla's own navigation platform. While corresponding adjustments have been implemented in iOS 26 and CarPlay, the slower rollout of these updates is hindering the launch.

Until enough devices are equipped with the appropriate iOS version, Tesla will likely wait to introduce CarPlay. The strategy seems clear: a later, stable launch of CarPlay is preferable to a premature release with potential problems. (Image: Shutterstock / Abu hasim asaru)
