With the iPhone 18 Pro, it appears that Apple is once again placing a strong emphasis on the camera. Recent reports from the supply chain and well-connected sources indicate that two key innovations for the rear camera are being tested. Both involve fundamental hardware aspects and could have a noticeable impact on image quality.
The information comes from Weibo user "Digital Chat Station", who has a history of providing accurate early details about Apple products. According to him, Apple is currently testing a new main camera with a variable aperture and a telephoto camera with a larger aperture for the iPhone 18 Pro. These statements align with a series of older rumors that have been circulating since late 2024.
Variable aperture for the main camera
One of the most important innovations Apple is currently testing is a main camera with a variable aperture. This technology allows the amount of light falling on the camera sensor to be actively controlled. In dark environments, the aperture can be opened wider to capture more light. In very bright light, it can be closed to prevent overexposure.
Another advantage lies in the control over depth of field. Depending on the aperture setting, the background can be blurred more or less. This opens up more creative possibilities without having to rely solely on software-based effects.
Until now, Apple has exclusively used fixed apertures in iPhones. From the iPhone 14 Pro to the iPhone 17 Pro, a fixed aperture of ƒ/1.78 is used. The lens is always fully open and operates at a constant light intensity.
That Apple was seriously preparing for this move had already been hinted at earlier. In December 2024, the well-known supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max would be equipped with a variable aperture. Another report from October 2025 indicated that Apple was actively pursuing these plans and in talks with suppliers about suitable components.
A look at the market shows that the technology is not new. Samsung Electronics incorporated a camera with a variable aperture into the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 models in 2018 and 2019. However, due to the increased thickness and high costs, the feature was discontinued from 2020 onwards.
New telephoto camera with a larger aperture
In addition to the main camera, Apple is also testing a redesigned telephoto camera for the iPhone 18 Pro, according to the source. While the current iPhone 17 Pro models already feature a 48-megapixel sensor in the telephoto camera, the aperture remains at ƒ/2.8.
A larger aperture would primarily improve light gathering. This would benefit several areas simultaneously: reduced image noise in low light, shorter shutter speeds, and better separation of subject and background. This change could be particularly noticeable in zoom shots.
More camera rumors
In addition to the two camera improvements tested, there are further indications of the features of the iPhone 18 Pro models. These include a teleconverter, which is said to increase the effective focal length and improve the zoom range. A new 24-megapixel front camera is also mentioned.
A clear focus on photography in the iPhone 18 Pro
Should the current tests prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro would differ from its predecessors in several key aspects. A variable aperture in the main camera and a brighter telephoto camera would represent genuine hardware upgrades with a direct impact on photo quality. Combined with potential improvements to the zoom and front camera, this strongly suggests that Apple is specifically addressing photographic weaknesses of previous generations with the iPhone 18 Pro. The market launch is expected this fall, alongside the first foldable iPhone. (Image: Kesu01 / DepositPhotos.com)
