Apple is planning a major camera upgrade with the iPhone 18 Pro, which is intended to take photography to a new technical level. According to a report in the Korean business newspaper ETNews, the upcoming Pro series will feature a main camera with a variable aperture for the first time. This should allow the camera to respond more flexibly to different lighting conditions and enable more realistic depth-of-field effects.

The camera has been one of the iPhone's key selling points for years. Apple continuously invests in the development of sensors, lenses, and software to keep the iPhone at the forefront of the smartphone market. With the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the next major camera update is now imminent. A variable aperture could significantly improve photo quality while opening up new creative possibilities.

Significantly improved camera system

According to ETNews , only the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be equipped with the new variable aperture. The main wide-angle camera on the back will be replaced by this new version, while the ultra-wide-angle and telephoto cameras will remain unchanged.

The variable aperture allows you to mechanically regulate the amount of light reaching the sensor. In dark environments, the aperture opens wider to capture more light. In very bright situations, it closes to prevent overexposure. This not only ensures better image quality in difficult lighting conditions but also allows for more precise control of depth of field—the relationship between sharpness in the foreground and background.

cooperation with suppliers

Apple is reportedly currently in talks with several suppliers to secure components for the new camera system. The camera unit itself will reportedly be manufactured by LG Innotech and Foxconn. The mechanical actuator responsible for the variable aperture control is said to come from the Chinese companies Luxshare ICT and Sunny Optical.

Integrating such technology requires high precision. Apple must ensure that the mechanism works reliably while meeting the company's high quality standards.

Premiere for Apple – and a look into the past

The variable aperture is a first for Apple. Until now, all iPhones, including the iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro, used a fixed aperture of f/1.78. The lens was always fully open.

Other manufacturers have already experimented with this technology. Samsung introduced a variable aperture camera on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S10 in 2018 and 2019, respectively, but abandoned this solution in 2020 due to the higher price and the additional thickness created by the mechanism.

Apple now seems to have found a way to integrate the benefits of this technology into a compact design.

Planned market launch and further models

The report also confirms earlier rumors from well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. According to this, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be unveiled in fall 2026. At the same time, the iPhone Air 2 and Apple's first foldable iPhone are expected to be unveiled. This makes the 2026 iPhone generation likely to be one of the most important in years.

iPhone 18 Pro sets new standards in smartphone photography

With the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple is introducing a variable aperture camera for the first time, taking a step that few manufacturers have successfully implemented. The technology promises better photos in difficult lighting conditions and more creative freedom for portraits and close-ups. If successfully implemented, the iPhone 18 Pro could become one of the most exciting iPhones in years—especially for those who place great value on high-quality smartphone photography.
