Apple develops H3 chip and prepares new AirPods models

After the launch of the AirPods Pro 3, Apple already has its sights set on its next goal. Although the current in-ear headphones offer some hardware improvements, they still feature the 2022 H2 chip. This means that the biggest innovations in the AirPods Pro 3 don't come from the software or silicon, but from physical optimizations—such as larger batteries or foam ear tips. Nevertheless, it's clear that Apple is continuing to work on its audio technology. According to recent reports, the H3 chip is already in development, as are new AirPods models that are said to feature enhanced features.

Apple is consistently continuing its development cycle. Following the release of the AirPods Pro 3, the company is focusing on new chips and features for future generations. The focus is on the H3 chip, which, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, will play a central role in future AirPods models. At the same time, Apple is working on the AirPods 5, a new version of the entry-level AirPods that, while unlikely to offer any major leaps forward, still represents a significant update to the product line.

The H3 chip: More power and better audio quality

According to Gurman, Apple's chip division is working on a new H3 processor for upcoming AirPods. This chip is designed to ensure less lag during audio transmissions and improve overall sound quality. The H3 chip is also expected to operate more efficiently and extend battery life.

When the H3 chip will actually be released is still unknown. However, it is suspected that it will be used for the first time in a new version of the AirPods Pro 3, which is expected to launch next year. This version is said to be equipped with infrared (IR) cameras, which require additional processing power. These could enable new functions, such as more precise head movement detection or better integration with Apple's mixed reality systems like the Vision Pro.

It's still unclear whether the AirPods Pro with IR cameras will feature a high-end chip like the H3 or whether Apple will continue to rely on proven hardware. What is certain, however, is that the H3 chip is being developed to take audio quality and responsiveness to the next level.

New AirPods 5: Updates to design and features

In addition to the H3 chip, Apple is also working on new entry-level AirPods. Following the AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation (ANC), a new generation will follow: the AirPods 5. Both AirPods 4 models were introduced just last year and already offer solid sound quality and an improved design.

According to Gurman , Apple plans to update both versions, although no major changes are expected. The focus will likely be on minor adjustments to design, battery life, and connectivity. The AirPods 5 are unlikely to adopt features from the AirPods Pro 3, such as the heart rate monitor.

In the long term, however, Apple plans to integrate additional health features into its AirPods. This may include a temperature sensor. Whether this feature will be introduced with the AirPods 5 is unclear. However, there are indications that Apple is gradually integrating the AirPods more closely with the topic of health.

There's no official timeline for the AirPods 5 yet. Gurman calls it a "modest update" compared to the current generation. It's conceivable that Apple will initially test the H3 chip in more expensive models before later implementing it in more affordable AirPods.

AirPods 4 currently available at a lower price

Interestingly, the AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC are currently 16 percent and 13 percent cheaper, respectively— €168 and €129 , respectively. This could be an indication that Apple is reducing inventory to make room for the next generation. So, if you're not waiting for the H3 chip and are happy with the current features, you can get these models quite cheaply right now.

Apple strengthens the AirPods ecosystem with its own chip technology

Apple remains true to its policy of developing more and more of its own components. The H3 chip is part of this strategy and is intended to give the AirPods even more autonomy. Together with possible health features in the upcoming AirPods models, it shows that Apple is not only focusing on sound and design, but is also increasingly integrating its audio products into its own ecosystem.

The goal is clear: seamless connectivity between devices, improved performance through proprietary chips, and additional features that go beyond music enjoyment. Exactly when the H3 chip and the AirPods 5 will be released isn't yet known—but one thing is certain: Apple has been working on the next generation for a long time.
