iPhone Fold: Why current leaks make technical sense

New leaks about the iPhone Fold keep surfacing. Many are vague or contradictory, while others fit remarkably well into the existing picture. The latest reports belong to the latter category. They provide concrete information about the battery and the button layout and can be explained in a technically sound way. This is precisely what makes them relevant and relatively credible.

As with all early information about unreleased Apple products, nothing is officially confirmed. Nevertheless, there are clear differences between mere rumors and leaks that come from reliable sources or align with existing reports. Two new pieces of evidence have now surfaced regarding the iPhone Fold. One is considered almost certain, while the other is more controversial but makes technical sense.

Report on the iPhone Fold battery

According to Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital, the iPhone Fold will be equipped with a 5500 mAh battery. This would be the largest battery Apple has ever used in an iPhone. This information is hardly surprising, as the iPhone Fold is expected to have the largest display ever in an iPhone. Such a display naturally requires more power to provide acceptable battery life.

This statement also aligns with an earlier report that suggested a battery capacity of 5400 to 5800 mAh. The new figure falls precisely within this range, thus confirming existing expectations. Apple's decision to use a particularly large battery in a foldable device seems consistent and logical.

Unusual key arrangement

The second report concerns the external design and breaks with a long-standing Apple tradition. According to the report, the volume buttons on the iPhone Fold will no longer be located on the left side, but rather on the top right of the device. This arrangement is reminiscent of the iPad mini and would alter familiar operating patterns.

The power button with integrated Touch ID function and the camera button will remain on the right side of the device. This information comes from leaker Instant Digital, whose track record is considered mixed. Nevertheless, the leak is being taken seriously because it can be technically explained.

Technical reasons for the new layout

A key argument for this button layout is the internal design of the iPhone Fold. The mainboard is located on the right side of the device. If buttons were also located on the left side, cables would have to be routed across the device to connect them to the mainboard.

Additionally, a free left side when the device is open allows more space for the battery. Even more importantly, it reduces the number of ribbon cables that have to run through the hinge mechanism. Every extra cable crossing the fold increases the mechanical stress and therefore the risk of failure.

Every avoided vulnerability counts

The hinge is the most vulnerable area on any flip phone. Manufacturers like Samsung have learned in the past how many problems can arise with this mechanism. The display is the most obvious risk, as it is constantly being folded and unfolded. But other components are also affected.

Flat ribbon cables, which are subjected to stress with every movement of the device, represent additional potential weak points. These cannot be completely avoided, but their number can be reduced. This is precisely where the design of the iPhone Fold comes in. By placing all the physical buttons on one side, several of these cable connections are eliminated.

Fewer cables running through the fold mean less material fatigue, fewer potential defects, and greater long-term robustness. For a foldable smartphone, this is a crucial factor.

iPhone Fold: Focus on everyday usability and robustness

The current reports about the iPhone Fold appear credible because they align with previous leaks and can also be explained technically. A particularly large battery is necessary for a device of this size. The unusual button layout isn't experimental, but rather serves to improve durability and the internal design.

Should this information be confirmed, it strongly suggests that Apple is placing a clear emphasis on stability and everyday usability with the iPhone Fold. This approach could be what sets it apart from previous foldable smartphones.
