Signs are mounting that Apple is about to update its Studio Display. Several independent sources indicate that Apple will be revising its external display. These include noticeable shipping delays, repeated reports from well-informed sources, and the discovery of a previously unreleased Apple display in government documents. Taken together, these clues paint a fairly clear picture of the current situation and the direction of the upcoming update.
In his latest Power-On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple's entry-level Studio Display is currently experiencing limited availability both online and in Apple Stores. Depending on the configuration, delivery times are being pushed back to the end of February or even the beginning of March.
Such shortages have been a classic pattern at Apple for years, occurring before product updates. Existing inventory is reduced while production is switched to a new model. The fact that this behavior is now evident with the Studio Display is therefore seen as a strong indication of an imminent update.
Current schedule for the Studio Display
Mark Gurman also reaffirms an earlier assessment in his report: The Studio Display update is still planned for the first half of 2026. According to his information, this timeframe remains unchanged.
Additionally, an unannounced external display from Apple appeared in government databases last month. Such entries typically appear relatively shortly before the market launch of new hardware and are therefore considered further evidence that Apple is preparing for release.
Expected technical innovations
As early as December, concrete rumors circulated that the new Studio Display would receive three significant technical improvements. These would bring the display considerably closer to Apple's Pro products.
- A19 chip: The upcoming Studio Display is expected to be equipped with an A19 chip. The current model already uses a dedicated chip to control the camera, audio, and image processing. However, the A19 would offer a noticeable performance boost, particularly in internal signal processing and future software features.
- ProMotion with 120 Hz: A key criticism of the previous Studio Display was its limited 60 Hz refresh rate. The new model will be the first to support ProMotion with up to 120 Hz. This will result in noticeably smoother animations, scrolling, and moving images, offering a clear advantage, especially for creative work and everyday use.
- HDR support: HDR support is also expected. This would allow the Studio Display to offer a wider contrast range and higher brightness. This would be a significant step forward for video and photo editing, as HDR now plays an important role in many professional workflows.
In relation to other Mac innovations
The Studio Display update isn't a standalone release. New MacBook Pro models are also expected at the same time. Mark Gurman points out that Apple plans to unveil the M5 Pro and M5 Max versions soon.
An updated Studio Display would therefore fit well into Apple's current product strategy: powerful Macs combined with better-matched external hardware. This would further increase the display's importance, especially for fixed workstation setups.
Apple Studio Display Update: Evidence continues to mount
The indications of a new Studio Display are now numerous and consistent. Reduced availability, regulatory findings, and repeated reports from reliable sources suggest that Apple is working on an update that will bring more than just minor adjustments.
With the A19 chip, 120Hz ProMotion, and HDR support, the Studio Display could be taking its biggest leap forward yet. More details are expected before its anticipated launch in the first half of 2026, but the direction of the update is already clear. (Photo by Unsplash / Mohamed Kerroudj)
