Report: Apple plans two new Home devices

Apple is apparently working on a whole range of new smart home products. Besides previously known rumors about a smart display and security accessories, a recent report mentions two other devices that have received little attention so far: an updated HomePod speaker and a compact indoor sensor for security and automation.

For some time now, there have been increasing signs that Apple intends to significantly expand its involvement in the smart home sector. While the company has already established a foundation with HomePod, Apple TV, and HomeKit, its portfolio has remained relatively small compared to its competitors.

The new report suggests that Apple could launch several new home products and accessory categories next year. This isn't just about individual updates, but rather an expanded product range with a stronger focus on artificial intelligence and automation.

Report: Several new AI devices for the home

Bloomberg reports that Apple is currently working on three new AI wearables. At the end of his article, Gurman also mentions a number of new AI devices for home use. According to the report, Apple is developing:

  • A smart display based on an upcoming overhaul of Siri.
  • A later version of this display with a larger screen and robotic arm
  • An updated HomePod speaker
  • A compact indoor sensor for home security and automation

The two display options have been mentioned several times in previous reports. The potential smart display, which could be called "HomePad" or "Home Hub", has been the subject of speculation for months. There have also been reports of a high-end version with an integrated robotic arm. What's new is the explicit mention of an updated HomePod and an indoor sensor.

Is a third-generation HomePod coming?

The report refers to an "updated HomePod speaker". It doesn't explicitly mention the HomePod mini. However, in previous reports, Gurman has always clearly distinguished between the regular HomePod and the smaller HomePod mini.

This wording suggests that Apple is working on a third-generation HomePod. While it remains unclear what technical changes are planned, the terminology points more towards a larger model than a mere mini-update. Updates for other products are also expected, including:

  • A new version of Apple TV 4K
  • The HomePod mini 2
  • Security cameras
  • A possible smart doorbell

The potential HomePod 3 would thus be part of a larger wave of updates.

Compact indoor sensor for safety and automation

Besides the speaker, the report mentions a "compact indoor sensor for home security and automation". Specific details about its function are not yet available.

However, its classification in the context of security and automation plans suggests that it could be a device that captures movements, environmental conditions, or other relevant data to control smart home processes.

Such a sensor would fit well with the rumored security cameras and doorbell products. Apple seems to be deliberately expanding its range of accessories. Until now, the company has been heavily reliant on third-party providers in the smart home security sector.

With its own accessories such as cameras, doorbells and now possibly an indoor sensor, Apple could build a more integrated ecosystem.

Expanded home product range planned

The report makes it clear that Apple is not just updating individual products, but is planning a broader range of home devices. In addition to wearables, several AI devices for the home are in development, apparently based on a new generation of Siri.

In summary, the expected product wave includes:

  • Smart Display with redesigned Siri
  • High-end version with larger screen and robotic arm
  • Updated HomePod speaker
  • HomePod mini 2
  • New Apple TV 4K
  • Security camera
  • Smart doorbell
  • Compact indoor sensor

This diversity suggests that Apple has significantly intensified its smart home strategy.

Apple is focusing more on its own smart home hardware

The latest report reveals that Apple is apparently preparing a major push into the smart home market. In addition to previously announced display projects, a potential third-generation HomePod and a compact indoor sensor are now taking center stage.

Should the information prove true, Apple would significantly expand its home ecosystem and rely more heavily on its own hardware in the areas of security and automation. The coming months should reveal which of these projects will actually reach market maturity. (Image: Apple)
