The M6 MacBook Pro is among the most anticipated Apple products in the near future. Various reports and insider information suggest that Apple could unveil a new MacBook Pro model later this year. What's particularly striking is that it's not just a technical update that's expected, but a more comprehensive upgrade with several fundamental changes.
The focus is on a new design, a new generation of chips, a touchscreen for the first time, and an OLED display. There are also hints of further features that could significantly enhance the Mac user experience.
A potential turning point for the MacBook Pro
The current design of the MacBook Pro series dates back to 2021. At that time, Apple introduced several changes, including additional ports and a redesigned cooling system. Since then, while the devices have been updated with new chips, there have been no fundamental changes to the casing or user interface.
The M6 MacBook Pro could change that. Rumors suggest Apple is working on a completely redesigned model. Besides a new casing, new technologies not previously seen in Macs are also expected.

The current MacBook Pro is intentionally designed to be slightly thicker to provide sufficient space for a powerful cooling system. New chip generation: M6, M6 Pro and M6 Max

Touchscreen support in Mac
One of the most striking potential innovations is a touchscreen. The M6 MacBook Pro could be the first Mac model to support touch input.
Apple had long refrained from integrating touchscreens into MacBooks. Now, this strategy appears to be changing. According to reports, however, touchscreens will not replace existing input methods.
Instead, touch input is introduced as an additional input option. Keyboard and trackpad remain the primary control methods.
In parallel, macOS 27 will be adapted to better handle touch input. This will involve making controls more touch-friendly without affecting traditional operation.
Furthermore, many familiar gestures from iOS and iPadOS are expected to be adopted, including:

- Two-finger zoom gestures
- Multi-finger gestures for various functions
This would give the Mac, for the first time, a user interface that was previously reserved mainly for mobile devices.
OLED display for the first time in a Mac
Another important change in the M6 MacBook Pro concerns the display technology. Reports indicate that Apple is planning to use an OLED display in a Mac for the first time.
Until now, Apple used LCD technology in MacBooks, while iPhones have been equipped with OLED for years. The iPad Pro also received a particularly high-quality tandem OLED display in 2024. OLED offers several technical advantages:

- stronger contrast
- better viewing angles
- more efficient rendering of dark content

Dynamic Island instead of Notch
The 2021 MacBook Pro was the first Mac model with a notch in the display. This solution may already be replaced in the M6 MacBook Pro.
Rumors suggest that Apple is planning a punch-hole camera cutout in the display instead. This hardware change will be complemented by a new software feature: Dynamic Island.
This feature was originally introduced on the iPhone. It uses the area around the camera cutout to display information and activity. On a Mac, Dynamic Island could perform several tasks, including:
- Display of live activities
- Extended system information
- additional interactions with apps
Furthermore, Dynamic Island could complement or extend the existing menu bar, thereby creating new possibilities for notifications and status displays.
Possible mobile cellular option with Apple's C2 modem
Another possible new feature concerns connectivity. Apple is apparently exploring the possibility of offering cellular connections on Macs in the future.
So far, Apple has not released a Mac with integrated cellular connectivity. However, reports indicate that this could change in the future.
The technical basis for this would be Apple's own C2 modem, considered the second generation of its in-house cellular chip. This modem is expected to support higher speeds than previous solutions.
Reports indicate that the C2 modem could be introduced in the iPhone 18 Pro around the same time. This would create a window of opportunity in which the Mac could also gain cellular connectivity for the first time.
However, there is currently no guarantee that this feature will actually be available on the M6 MacBook Pro. Some indications suggest that cellular connectivity in Macs may not become a reality until later.
A comprehensive update is on the horizon
