Apple has created a new entry-level model in its Mac lineup with the MacBook Neo. The device is aimed at users looking for a more affordable Apple laptop and is primarily intended to compete with budget-friendly Windows laptops and Chromebooks. The starting price is €699, or €599 for educational institutions.
While the first model has only just been unveiled, there are already hints about the next generation. According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the MacBook Neo 2 could be released in 2027. One of the most significant potential innovations is a touchscreen.
Apple has long resisted the use of touchscreens in Macs. However, many laptop manufacturers already offer this feature, especially in the more affordable segment. Devices from HP, Lenovo, Acer, and ASUS have been using touch displays for years.
If Apple does indeed integrate this feature into the Mac line, the MacBook Neo 2 could play a significant role. The Neo series is intended as a budget-friendly product line and would therefore be entering a market where touchscreens are already widespread.
The first MacBook Neo: Apple's new entry-level Mac
Apple has introduced the MacBook Neo as a completely new laptop. The goal is to expand the Mac product line with a significantly more affordable option.
The device is powered by an A18 Pro chip, originally designed for the iPhone 16 Pro. This distinguishes the MacBook Neo from all other Macs with Apple Silicon, which typically use an M-series chip. Features include:
- 13-inch Liquid Retina display with uniform iPad-like display edges
- colorful design with a rounded shape
- Magic Keyboard with color-coordinated keyboard
- mechanical trackpad
- 8 GB RAM
- two USB-C ports
- headphone jack
- 1080p camera
- two microphones
- two speakers with Spatial Audio
- Battery life of up to 16 hours
Hints about the MacBook Neo 2
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo correctly predicted last year that the MacBook Neo would enter mass production in the fourth quarter of 2025. In the same report, he also provided initial insights into the second generation.
According to this, the MacBook Neo 2 could be released in 2027. Kuo stated that the exact specifications were not yet finalized in September 2025. Likely improvements include:
- a faster chip, presumably the A19 Pro
- 12 GB RAM
MacBook Neo 2 with touchscreen
The possibility of a touchscreen in the MacBook Neo 2 is particularly interesting. Apple has not yet released a Mac with a touch display.
According to Kuo, the first Mac with a touchscreen is expected to be released even sooner. A new high-end MacBook Pro with an OLED display, a new design, and touch support is anticipated.
Following the introduction of such a model and potential touch support in macOS 27, it would be logical for other MacBooks to also receive this feature. The MacBook Neo 2 could therefore be among the next devices to feature a touchscreen.

On-cell touch technology
The MacBook Neo 2 is expected to feature a touch panel with on-cell touch technology. This integrates the touch sensors directly into the top layer of the display panel, instead of using a separate touch layer. This allows the display to be made thinner.
This technique is particularly suitable for slim devices such as laptops and could help reduce height and weight.
Neo could become its own Apple product line
The "Neo" brand itself could also play a larger role in the future. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is considering using the name for other budget-friendly devices.
One possible example would be an Apple Watch Neo, which could be based on the Apple Watch SE.

MacBook Neo 2: The next step for Apple's affordable laptop line
The MacBook Neo 2 could be an important step for Apple. While the first MacBook Neo stood out primarily for its low price and the A18 Pro chip, the second generation could bring more significant technical changes.
A touchscreen, an A19 Pro chip, 12 GB of RAM, and on-cell touch technology would significantly enhance the device. At the same time, this would mark the first time Apple has introduced touch functionality to a broader Mac product line.
If the predictions prove accurate, the MacBook Neo 2 could be released in 2027, further expanding Apple's strategy in the affordable laptop segment. (Image: Apple)
