Many rumors are currently circulating about the MacBook Pro, promising the imminent release of new models. Some even suggest a launch within days. However, these predictions are being tempered by new information. Recent reports indicate that Apple is planning major Mac updates not in the short term, but in the near future.
In the Apple world, rumors often originate from supply chains, internal product identifiers, or speculation surrounding events. However, what's crucial is which sources have proven reliable in the past. Mark Gurman is considered one of the most accurate Apple leakers, especially when it comes to specific launch windows. His recent statements paint a significantly different picture than many short-term predictions.
No new MacBook models in the next few days
According to Mark Gurman, Apple will not be unveiling any new MacBook models in the coming days. In his "Power On" newsletter for Bloomberg, he explains that while new versions of the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac Studio are expected in early 2026, they will not be released in the next few days. This contradicts reports suggesting an imminent presentation.
Especially with short-term launches, Gurman has demonstrated a very high success rate in the past. His assessments therefore carry more weight than many other rumors circulating in the industry.
The M5 chip has not yet arrived in the entire Mac lineup
Currently, the M5 generation is not yet widely represented in the Mac ecosystem. The M5 chip is currently only found in the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro. Apple seems to be deliberately waiting before transitioning the rest of its product line. According to Gurman, Apple plans a broader rollout of the M5 chips this year to close the existing gap within the Mac product line.
MacBook Pro: Update with M5 Pro and M5 Max
The MacBook Pro is expected to receive a classic performance update in early 2026. New variants with the M5 Pro and M5 Max processors are anticipated. Major design changes are not expected. Instead, the focus will be on improved technical specifications and increased performance.
A comprehensive redesign of the MacBook Pro with an OLED touchscreen is planned, but is not expected until the end of 2026. Therefore, the next generation will retain the existing design language.
MacBook Air and a new, affordable MacBook
The 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air are also due for an update. Given the availability of the M5 chip series, a switch to the new processor is considered likely. Product identifiers revealed in July 2025 also point to a market launch in early 2026.
Content-wise, only minor changes are expected. Besides the new chip, the improvements are likely to be primarily technical in nature. While an OLED display is considered a long-term goal, it is not expected until 2028 at the earliest.
Particularly noteworthy is another notebook, internally referred to as a budget MacBook. This model is expected to be released with reduced specifications and will likely use an A18 Pro chip, the same one used in the iPhone. The goal is to offer the lowest possible entry price.
Desktop Macs: Mac mini and Mac Studio
Updates for desktop Macs are also planned for this year. The Mac mini is expected to receive an update with M5 and M5 Pro chips. The Mac Studio is expected to get at least an M5 Max. It remains unclear whether and in what form an Ultra variant will be offered.
Apple Studio Display: Two new variants under discussion
Revisions are also expected for the Apple Studio Display. One model is rumored to be an update to the existing 27-inch 5K display and will feature Mini-LED backlighting instead of traditional LED.
There is also speculation about another display, which could be larger. A 32-inch screen with a resolution of 6K or even 7K is being discussed. However, no concrete details or timelines are yet available.
Looking ahead: M6 could arrive sooner than expected
Although the M5 is currently the focus, Gurman believes the M6 chip could appear sooner than expected. Apple doesn't seem to be afraid of short generation cycles. A case in point is the short gap of only five months between the introduction of the M3 and the M4. This strategy could also lead to faster and more frequent performance improvements for the MacBook Pro in the future.
