According to recent reports, iOS 27 will see one of the biggest changes to Siri since its introduction in 2011. Instead of a traditional voice assistant, a true chatbot experience is expected, one that is much more closely aligned with modern AI systems. This would represent a clear step for Apple towards generative AI and help it catch up with other providers.
The information comes from a detailed Bloomberg report written by Mark Gurman, considered one of the most reliable observers of Apple's internal developments. The report describes a significant shift in Apple's AI plans, even though the company continues to publicly deny developing an additional chatbot.
The transition from Siri to a chatbot
According to the report, Apple plans to fundamentally overhaul Siri this year. The goal is to transform the voice assistant into the company's first true AI chatbot. This would put Apple directly in competition with providers like OpenAI and Google.
The project's internal codename is "Campos." This new Siri version is intended not just as an extension, but to completely replace the existing interface. The method of activation remains the same: via the voice command "Siri" or by pressing and holding the side button on an iPhone or iPad.
Chatbot interaction instead of individual commands
The key difference from the previous Siri lies in the interaction style. While Siri previously reacted primarily to individual commands (more or less), the new version will rely on a conversational approach. This is strongly based on the chatbot principle popularized by ChatGPT.
Conversations should be able to flow seamlessly, with context across multiple queries. Text and voice input are supported equally, without any breaks between sessions. This continuity is precisely what Siri has lacked until now, despite its existing voice and text input capabilities.
Presentation at WWDC and planned release
The Siri overhaul has not yet been officially announced. However, according to Gurman, it is expected to be unveiled at the WWDC developers conference in June. It is planned as one of the key features of iOS 27 and macOS 27.
The release is expected in September, which is the time when Apple traditionally rolls out its major operating system updates.
Interim solution: Siri and Apple Intelligence in iOS 26
In parallel, Apple is already planning an update for Siri and Apple Intelligence this spring. This version will retain the familiar Siri interface, but the underlying technical intelligence will be provided by Google's Gemini processors.
Compared to the planned overhaul for iOS 27, this update seems more like a preparatory step. It marks the beginning of a modernization, not its conclusion.
New features through deep system access
According to Bloomberg, the great strength of the new Siri chatbot lies in its comprehensive access to the operating system. Unlike external AI chatbots, Siri has direct access to system functions and personal data to efficiently complete tasks. The following capabilities are planned, among others:
- Searching for information on the internet
- Summary of contents
- Text creation
- Image generation
- Analysis of uploaded files
Additionally, personal data will be used to specifically find files, songs, calendar events, or text messages.
Integration with core Apple apps
Another important point is the close integration with Apple's core apps. These include Mail, Music, Podcasts, TV, Photos, and the Xcode development environment.
This enables more complex tasks to be performed using voice commands. One example is searching for a specific photo based on its content and then editing it, for example by cropping or color correction. Similarly, emails can be composed automatically, for example based on upcoming appointments from the calendar.
No separate chatbot – at least officially
Apple has publicly stated that it will not develop a separate chatbot interface. The approach described by Gurman circumvents this promise by making Siri itself the chatbot. From the user's perspective, this creates a modern AI experience without the need for a separate application.
iOS 27 as a turning point for Siri and Apple's AI strategy
With iOS 27, Apple could fundamentally redefine Siri. The planned chatbot architecture, deep system access, and tight app integration point to a long-awaited reboot.
