iPhone 17e: Dynamic Island is coming, display remains at 60 Hz

The iPhone 17e occupies a clearly defined role within the upcoming iPhone generation. New leaks reveal that Apple has given the device a modern look, but is deliberately limiting its technological capabilities. This means the iPhone 17e remains a consciously more affordable model that doesn't adopt all the innovations of the iPhone 17 series, but still brings important changes.

For several years, Apple has pursued a strategy of combining older designs with select new features to remain competitively priced. This concept continues with the iPhone 17e. The device is aimed at users who want a current iPhone but can do without premium features, as long as the design, performance, and everyday usability are satisfactory.

Dynamic Island replaces the Notch

One of the most noticeable changes to the iPhone 17e is the switch from the notch to the Dynamic Island. Instead of the wide cutout at the top of the display, the interactive area is used for the first time, displaying ongoing activities such as navigation, music, or timers, while also integrating the camera and front sensors (via Weibo).

This change brings the iPhone 17e visually closer to the newer iPhone models. While the iPhone 16e was still heavily based on the design of the iPhone 14, there are many indications that the iPhone 17e is based on the iPhone 15. This includes not only the Dynamic Island, but also an overall more modern-looking, rounded frame.

OLED display remains at 60 Hz

Despite the design improvements, Apple remains technically conservative with the display. The iPhone 17e will continue to use a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate. This means the device foregoes ProMotion technology with up to 120Hz, which provides particularly smooth scrolling and animations.

Apple had significantly upgraded the display on other models in the iPhone 17 series, similar to what they had done previously with the Pro models. This upgrade is deliberately omitted from the iPhone 17e to keep production costs down and the price stable.

A19 chip with possible throttling

The iPhone 17e is expected to feature a new A19 chip. It replaces the previous A18 chip from the iPhone 16e. The A19 is based on TSMC's third-generation 3-nanometer process, known as N3P. In terms of pure CPU performance, it is expected to be about 5 to 10 percent faster than the A18.

However, there are conflicting reports from the leaker community. Another Weibo leaker claims that Apple might use a downclocked A19 chip in the iPhone 17e. In that case, apart from improvements to the Neural Engine, the performance would be roughly on par with the A17 Pro. This would still be sufficient for everyday use and long-term software updates.

MagSafe may be making a comeback

Another important point concerns charging and accessory capabilities. Rumors suggest the iPhone 17e will once again feature a magnetic ring, enabling the use of MagSafe chargers. This feature was completely absent from the iPhone 16e, which many considered a drawback.

To save costs, Apple might make cuts elsewhere. The use of an older C1 or C1X modem is expected. The newer N1 wireless chip, however, is not expected to be included, according to leaked Apple code.

Camera and security remain unchanged

No major changes are expected in the camera setup. The iPhone 17e is expected to retain its 12-megapixel front camera. The rear camera will remain a 48-megapixel main camera. Face ID is also expected to stay the same, providing biometric unlocking. Apple is thus relying on proven technology rather than experimenting with new hardware.

Possible market launch and price

The iPhone 17e is currently expected to launch in February, similar to the iPhone 16e last year. A later launch in the spring is also considered possible. No change in price is anticipated; the starting price is expected to remain at €699.

Apple is focusing on Balance instead of Premium with the iPhone 17e

The iPhone 17e combines a more modern design with clear technical limitations. The introduction of Dynamic Island and the switch to the A19 chip noticeably improve the model. At the same time, it retains a 60Hz display, older wireless technology, and familiar cameras to keep the price down.

This means the iPhone 17e remains a deliberately positioned device within the iPhone 17 series. It offers a modern look and solid performance without venturing into the premium segment. For many, this balance will likely be its appeal. (Image: Shutterstock / Kaspars Grinvalds)
