The iPhone 17e is still awaiting its official unveiling, yet some concrete details are already emerging. Several leaks from China suggest targeted technical adjustments with which Apple intends to position the next e-model as more modern without significantly increasing its price. The focus is on a new front design, an updated chip, and minor changes to the specifications.
Apple's "e" models are intended as a more affordable alternative within each iPhone generation. With the iPhone 16e, the manufacturer relied heavily on familiar technology, including the classic notch and a slightly less powerful A18 chip. The iPhone 17e is expected to continue this approach but with significant improvements. This information comes primarily from Chinese leakers with insights into supply chains and pre-production planning.
Design and Display
One of the most prominent rumors surrounding the iPhone 17e concerns its display design. According to the Weibo account Smart Pikachu, Apple is set to replace the current notch with a pill-shaped Dynamic Island. This area at the top of the screen serves as an interactive display for ongoing activities and integrates the camera and other front-facing sensors.
That would be a clear departure from the design of the iPhone 16e, which visually strongly resembles the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. At the same time, there are conflicting reports. Other rumors suggest that Apple will continue to use the OLED panel based on the iPhone 14, but with narrower bezels. If that's true, the iPhone 17e would retain the notch after all.
Regardless, the device will still feature a 6.1-inch OLED display with a 60 Hz refresh rate. A higher refresh rate is not currently planned.
Performance and A19 chip
The processor is also expected to receive an update. The iPhone 17e is rumored to have an A19 chip, which will be underclocked compared to the Pro models. Its raw processing power is therefore expected to be below that of the current top models, but roughly on par with the A17 Pro.
Improvements are expected primarily in the Neural Engine. This could have a positive impact on AI functions, photo processing, and overall efficiency. For comparison, the iPhone 16e uses an A18 chip with a quad-core GPU, while the regular iPhone 16 uses a five-core GPU.
Additional features and potential savings
Besides the chip and display, further details about the specifications are circulating. One rumor suggests that the iPhone 17e will be the first to feature a magnetic ring for MagSafe accessories. This would enable wireless charging with magnetic alignment, a feature missing from the iPhone 16e.
To save costs, Apple might use older technology for the cellular modem. A C1 or C1X modem is being discussed, but without the N1 wireless chip. This is suggested by leaked code concerning internal Apple components.
Production, market launch and price
According to Smart Pikachu, mass production of the iPhone 17e is expected to begin after CES. This suggests a production start around January 9th. This timeline aligns with reports that Apple plans to launch the device in the spring.
A sales launch approximately one year after the iPhone 16e, which was unveiled in February, is considered likely. No changes to the price are expected; the starting price is expected to remain at €699.
Classification of the leaks
The information mentioned comes from sources including Smart Pikachu and the well-known leaker Digital Chat Station. The latter had previously mentioned Dynamic Island and the A19 chip in the iPhone 17e. Smart Pikachu, on the other hand, is primarily known for accurate information from the Android supply chain, but doesn't yet have a long track record with Apple rumors.
Additionally, Smart Pikachu claimed that Apple is testing under-display Face ID for future iPhone 18 Pro models. Whether this assessment is accurate remains to be seen.
iPhone 17e as a targeted update rather than a major overhaul
The iPhone 17e appears to be a moderate but targeted upgrade. A possible new front design with Dynamic Island, a more efficient A19 chip, and minor improvements like MagSafe could make the model significantly more appealing than its predecessor. At the same time, rumors suggest that Apple is deliberately cutting costs in some areas to keep the price stable. How much of this will ultimately be implemented will only become clear with the official unveiling, but the direction is already quite obvious. (Image: Shutterstock / Yu_Nus)
