OpenAI is preparing for another strategic move. Following the rapid expansion of its AI models and platforms, the company is now focusing on its own hardware for the first time. In parallel, the company is strengthening Jony Ive's team with additional former Apple employees. These developments indicate that OpenAI intends to be more than just a software provider in the long term, but sees its own devices as an integral part of its ecosystem.

While many details remain unclear, evidence is mounting of a concrete hardware strategy. OpenAI aims to unveil hardware from 2026 onwards

According to Chris Lehane, Policy Chief of OpenAI, the company is working towards launching its first hardware device in the second half of 2026. Lehane made this statement to Axios journalists Ina Fried and Dave Lawler at Axios House Davos.

Lehane left open the question of whether the device will actually be delivered in 2026. However, he emphasized that OpenAI is clearly aiming for a launch in the second half of the year. This makes an official unveiling realistic, provided development progresses as planned.

This assessment aligns with previous industry reports that anticipate a market launch in 2027. However, an announcement as early as 2026 would still be considered a significant milestone and provide early insight into OpenAI's hardware ambitions.

Expansion of the io team with Apple veterans

Alongside product planning, OpenAI is making targeted investments in design and engineering. The so-called io-team, which was built together with Jony Ive, has brought on board another experienced developer, Janum Trivedi. Trivedi previously worked at Apple on core system components and user interfaces.

His projects included SpringBoard, Split View, multitasking drag & drop, and pointer gestures for iPadOS 15. According to his LinkedIn profile, he has now joined the OpenAI x LoveFrom design team and is working directly on io products.

Trivedi's commitment underscores OpenAI's strong focus on interface design and user experience in hardware development. These areas are considered crucial for establishing new device categories.

Collaboration between Sam Altman and Jony Ive

Back in May of last year, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Jony Ive announced their collaboration on a range of AI hardware products. Ive, who shaped the design of Apple products for many years, brings his experience from developing iconic devices to the project.

It has now been revealed that a first prototype has been completed and work on further iterations is continuing. Specific details regarding the design or functionality of the device have not yet been made public.

Focus on audio as a potential core of the hardware

A recent report by The Information provided further clues regarding the direction of the first product. According to the report, OpenAI is currently focusing on improving its audio models before introducing a predominantly audio-based hardware product.
