Apple is shaking up the global smart glasses market

Even before its official product launch, Apple is already causing noticeable movement in the smart glasses market. Although the company's first AR glasses are not expected to appear until the end of 2026, the effects are already clearly visible in the global supply chain for AR optics. Particularly in Taiwan, numerous suppliers are adapting their strategies, increasing investments, and shifting their technological focus.

The smart glasses market has been developing gradually for years. Products from other manufacturers are already available, but a major commercial breakthrough has yet to materialize. According to a DigiTimes report, this assessment is now changing. The industry expects Apple's entry into the market to be the decisive catalyst for widespread commercialization. This expectation alone is enough to have a lasting impact on supply chains, research budgets, and production plans.

Apple's planned entry as the trigger

Demand for smart glasses is already growing, driven in part by products from Meta. Nevertheless, Apple's planned market entry is seen as the real turning point. Apple's entry is expected not only to significantly increase production volumes but also to ensure more stable supply chains and reduce the costs of key components. This prospect is currently driving many suppliers to expand their capacities and position themselves early.

Taiwan's optics suppliers are making targeted investments

Several companies in Taiwan's optics industry have increased their investments. The focus is clearly on AR technologies, which are essential for modern smart glasses designs. Research and development are being expanded, new production lines are being prepared, and existing expertise is being strategically developed. This is driven by the expectation that Apple will have high technical requirements while simultaneously ordering large volumes.

Kinko Optical as a key supplier

A particularly striking example is Kinko Optical. The company has opened a new research center for AR, VR, and MR technologies. The investment amounts to approximately US$5.6 million. Kinko occupies a unique position as it is currently the only Taiwanese company developing both nanoimprint optical waveguides and optical engines. Both technologies are considered crucial for high-performance and compact AR glasses. Joint development projects with customers are slated to begin in 2026, which aligns with Apple's rumored product plans.

Other suppliers are realigning themselves

Other companies are pursuing a similar strategy. Asia Optical is driving the development of AR, VR, and Metalens products, collaborating with the Singapore-based company MetaOptics. The goal of this cooperation is the joint development of advanced Metalens technology.

JMO Corp. is already integrated into existing AR glasses supply chains and is further expanding its presence. Aiimax Innovation has now completed Metalens samples, which are currently undergoing trademark certification. These steps demonstrate how broadly the industry is preparing for the anticipated demand.

Competition and timetable until 2026

Besides Apple, Samsung also plans to launch its own smart glasses in 2026. Apple is also expected to unveil its first smart glasses by the end of this year. The simultaneous market entry of several major manufacturers is likely to significantly increase market volume and intensify competition. At the same time, it provides greater planning certainty for suppliers.

Smart Glasses: Apple's influence begins before market launch

Apple's plans for smart glasses are already having an impact long before their market launch. Investments are increasing, research priorities are shifting, and supply chains are being restructured. Apple's anticipated entry into the market is considered a crucial factor in moving smart glasses from a niche product to the mass market. Whether and how quickly this effect will materialize remains to be seen. However, preparations are already in full swing. (Image: Shutterstock / TimeStopper69)
