Text snippets have appeared in the Android version of Apple Music, hinting at new subscription tiers – possibly even a free model. The timing is intriguing: just a few weeks ago, Apple's music chief described a free offering as a bad idea. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but the clues are specific enough to raise questions.
Since its launch, Apple Music has been one of the few major streaming services without a free tier – a deliberate distinction from Spotify and other providers. This unique selling point could now be in jeopardy. Given that Apple views its services business as a key growth area with significant expansion potential, a cheaper or free entry point would be an obvious way to attract more users to its ecosystem.
What appeared in the Android beta
The clues were discovered by Aaron Perris, who found two conspicuous text snippets in the latest beta version of the Apple Music app for Android. One indicates that a certain action requires a "Premium" account. The second is an error message reading "Can't skip any more tracks," which appears once a limit on skipping tracks has been reached.
Such wording only makes sense if there are different access levels in the future. In a purely paid model, where every subscriber already has full access, there would be no need for a "Premium" label or a skip limit. For Perris, this suggests a free or at least cheaper offer.
Apple Music: Nothing confirmed yet
Exactly what such a model would look like remains unclear. Whether Apple is planning a completely free tier or simply several subscriptions at different prices is not apparent from the findings. Perris himself points out that the text snippets could theoretically also belong to another function – for example, radio stations.
However, the interpretation of this as a free offer is supported by looking at the competition. Restrictions such as a skip limit are a classic feature of free plans, as seen with Spotify and other services. Spotify still explicitly promotes unlimited track skipping as an advantage of its paid subscriptions. A skip limit on Apple Music would therefore fit perfectly into the pattern the industry uses to differentiate between free and paid users.
Apple's previous stance on the "Free" model
These findings are particularly noteworthy in light of a recent statement from Apple. Just a month earlier, Oliver Schusser, head of Apple Music, had made it clear in an interview that he considered a free model a mistake. Apple Music was the only major service without a free tier – and they were quite proud of that.
The fact that these text snippets have now appeared in a beta version doesn't necessarily disprove this stance, but it does show that Apple is at least experimenting with the technical possibilities. Under the designated CEO John Ternus, there are already indications that Apple intends to make its services more competitive. A more attractive entry point to Apple Music would fit into this picture.
Apple Music: Why an announcement could be imminent
The fact that the text snippets are already in beta is considered an indication that a corresponding update might not be far off – features rarely appear in the code without concrete plans behind them. However, a firm release date or official details are still lacking.
Currently, there's no way around a paid subscription: Apple Music costs €10.99 per month in Germany, with the first month free. Should a cheaper or free tier actually follow, it would be one of the biggest strategic U-turns in the service's history – and a clear sign that Apple is taking a more aggressive approach to competing for listeners than before.
