iOS 27 raises Genmoji and Image Playground to a new level of quality

Apple's own image generation is set to take a significant leap forward in iOS 27. Genmoji and Image Playground will receive improved models with noticeably higher visual quality. Additionally, Apple is opening Image Playground to other AI providers besides ChatGPT.

Since their launch in iOS 18.2, Genmoji and Image Playground have been two of Apple's most visible AI features - and simultaneously two that have clearly lagged behind specialized AI tools in terms of image quality. With iOS 27, Apple aims to address precisely this. According to a new Bloomberg report from the Power On newsletter, the company's own image models will receive a "major quality boost," and Image Playground will simultaneously open up to additional third-party models. This new feature is one of a whole list of major iOS 27 initiatives that Apple is expected to unveil at WWDC 2026.

Custom models see a noticeable improvement

The focus is on the image quality of Apple's own generation models. Both Genmoji and Image Playground currently use models that quickly reach their limits in everyday use. Genmoji delivers acceptable results in many cases, while Image Playground produces images that are significantly inferior to those of competing generators.

This gap is expected to be closed with iOS 27. According to the report, the models have been redesigned, and the improvement in quality is described as a "big boost." However, there are currently no concrete examples or comparison images, nor are there any details on whether Apple has fundamentally changed the architecture or whether the existing models have simply been further developed.

Will processing remain on-device?

An important point to note: Image Playground and Genmoji currently run locally on the device. This explains some of the existing quality limitations, because on-device models are inherently smaller than their cloud counterparts and therefore have less processing power available.

Whether the new models in iOS 27 will continue to run on-device or whether Apple will switch to cloud processing, at least partially, is not yet known. The question is not trivial: If Apple were to incorporate cloud processing, the quality could be significantly improved – but at the cost of the current privacy advantage that Apple Intelligence uses to position itself, particularly against ChatGPT and other cloud-based AIs.

Image Playground opens up to more AI models

In addition to improving the quality of its own models, there is a second structural step: Image Playground will support additional AI providers in the future. Currently, only ChatGPT and Apple's models are integrated as external sources. With iOS 27, further models are expected to be integrated – Google's Nano Banana is specifically under discussion, and other providers are likely to follow.

For Apple, this represents a significant shift in strategy. Instead of relying on a single partner, Image Playground is evolving into a platform where multiple models coexist. Users can choose between Apple's own models, ChatGPT, and alternative generators – depending on their image style or requirements. It's the same platform approach Apple uses for the AI-powered Siri model selection.

Genmoji is getting more than just better pictures

The quality improvements aren't the only new feature coming to Genmoji in 2026. It was previously reported that Apple is introducing automatic Genmoji suggestions based on the photo library and other contextual data. Instead of manually describing each Genmoji, iOS would present suitable suggestions derived from personal content.

The combination results in a significant leap in functionality: improved image quality meets more intelligent suggestions. Genmoji thus evolves from a purely gimmicky feature to a function that is actually usable in everyday messaging – provided the promised quality improvement lives up to the report's claims in practice.

Apple Intelligence is shifting its focus

Image generation was one of the loudest AI trends in 2024, but it was the biggest disappointment for Apple Intelligence. With iOS 27, Apple is attempting to structurally rebuild this area: better in-house models, more third-party options, and intelligent suggestions. This strategy aligns with a broader Apple Intelligence update that also encompasses other visual functions, including the Photos app.

How much of this Apple will reveal in the WWDC keynote on June 8th, and which parts will only become visible in later beta phases, remains to be seen. One thing is clear, however: the Image Playground chapter, which began rather tentatively with iOS 18.2, is getting a second go with iOS 27 – this time with significantly higher ambitions.

From weak point to platform feature

Image Playground and Genmoji were more of a demo than a tool at launch. If the new models live up to the report's promises, they could develop into a serious platform component. More interesting than the pure question of quality is the underlying architecture: Apple is moving from a proprietary model silo to an open platform where its own and external generators coexist. This changes not only the image output but also how Apple Intelligence functions overall. (Image: Shutterstock / Primakov)
