An unusually large technological leap is on the horizon for the AirPods Pro. Several leakers and analysts predict that Apple plans to integrate cameras into the earbuds in an upcoming version. This would significantly differentiate the AirPods Pro from previous in-ear headphones in terms of functionality and open up new areas of application, such as gesture control and spatial audio.

Rumors about new AirPods Pro surface regularly, but the latest reports go far beyond minor improvements. Cameras in earbuds may sound futuristic at first, but they fit well with Apple's long-term focus on mixed reality and new user interface concepts. Several independent sources provide concrete evidence that together paint a fairly consistent picture.

Evidence of cameras in the AirPods Pro

The starting point for the current speculation is the leaker and prototype collector Kosutami. He reports that the next generation of AirPods Pro will be able to "see" the wearer's surroundings. According to him, this will be made possible by cameras built directly into each earbud. These are presumably not traditional cameras for photos or videos, but rather very small sensors for environmental sensing.

These statements align with previous assessments by renowned supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He anticipates that Apple will incorporate at least one tiny infrared camera into the upcoming AirPods Pro. Such sensors are particularly well-suited for detecting movement and distance.

Gesture control and spatial audio

One key application for infrared cameras could be gesture control. Hand movements could be captured without having to touch an iPhone, Apple Watch, or other device. This would enable a new kind of interaction with the AirPods Pro, going beyond the current tapping or pressing on the earbuds.

Furthermore, Kuo had already hinted that AirPods Pro with infrared cameras could work closely with Apple's Vision Pro headset. The goal would be even more precise spatial audio, more closely aligned with head movements, gestures, and the real-world environment. The AirPods Pro would thus become an integral part of Apple's mixed reality strategy.

Pricing and market position

According to Kosutami, the new AirPods Pro will still be offered at a price of $249 or €249. This would keep them priced at the same level as the current model. Chinese leaker Instant Digital introduces an additional differentiation. According to his information, the AirPods Pro with infrared cameras are not a completely new generation, but rather a more expensive, high-end version of the AirPods Pro 3, which will be introduced in 2025. Both models could remain in the product lineup. Such an approach wouldn't be unprecedented, as Apple already offers two versions of the AirPods 4 at different price points.

Space in the existing AirPods portfolio

Apple's current AirPods product line includes models priced at €149, €199, €249, and €579. This leaves a clear gap between the AirPods Pro and the significantly more expensive AirPods Max. An additional premium model with enhanced features would fill this gap.

This strategy also aligns with the general market trend. High-quality Bluetooth earbuds from manufacturers like Bang & Olufsen, Bowers & Wilkins, or Bose are becoming increasingly important. A technically upgraded AirPods Pro model could be strategically positioned here.

Unusual update cycle

Regardless of the exact classification, Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple is already planning a successor to the AirPods Pro 3 for 2026. This would be remarkable, as Apple typically allows about three years between major hardware updates to its AirPods models.

For comparison: The AirPods Pro 2 were introduced in September 2022 and only updated in September 2023 with a USB-C charging case and minor improvements. Fundamental technical innovations are usually much less frequent at Apple.

Possible time of presentation

Whether it will ultimately be a new high-end version of the AirPods Pro 3 or a fully-fledged AirPods Pro 4 is currently unknown. What is clear, however, is that Apple traditionally announces new AirPods in the second half of the year. Previous AirPods models, including the AirPods Pro 2, its USB-C redesign, the AirPods 4, and the AirPods Pro 3, were all unveiled at the annual iPhone event in September.
