WhatsApp is working on a new feature that could significantly simplify communication. For iPhone users, an automatic message translation is emerging, integrated directly into chats and intended to reduce language barriers in everyday life.
The information comes from the current TestFlight beta, discovered by WABetaInfo. The feature isn't officially released yet, but the details clearly indicate the direction of development. It's based on Apple's own translation technology, which runs directly on the device, thus combining privacy and speed.
Automatic translation in chat
The beta version includes a "Translate messages" toggle that can be activated for each chat. When enabled, incoming messages are automatically translated. Users can also specify the source and target languages. For example, the translation is automatically set to English.
Previous solution and improvement
Currently, translation only works manually, requiring several steps. A message must be selected and the translation option activated separately. The new feature would fully automate and significantly simplify this process.
Entire chats instead of individual messages
The plan is to enable the translation of not just individual messages, but entire conversations. This applies to individual and group chats, as long as all participants use the same language.
Technology and supported languages
The translation is based on Apple's language packs and processed directly on the iPhone, thus preserving end-to-end encryption. Currently, 21 languages are supported, including German, English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Japanese, and others. New languages are added automatically as soon as Apple adds them.
No release date
The feature is present in the code, but not yet enabled for testers. There is no official release date yet.
WhatsApp relies on automatic language translation
WhatsApp is working on a significant improvement for international communication. Automatic translation directly in the chat could make dealing with different languages considerably easier. The launch date is still unknown, but the direction is clear. (Image: Shutterstock / TippaPatt)
