iOS 26.4: Family Sharing becomes more flexible with payments

With iOS 26.4, Apple is making a targeted adjustment to "Family Sharing." The change may seem minor at first glance, but it affects a key aspect of its current use: the shared payment method. Going forward, managing purchases within a family group will be significantly more flexible.

Family Sharing has been an integral part of iOS for years. It allows users to share digital content such as apps, music, movies, or subscriptions. This is particularly useful for sharing paid content within a group.

Until now, this feature was tied to a clear condition: a single payment method. This restriction is being adjusted with iOS 26.4. Apple is responding to a practical need that has become apparent in the everyday lives of many users.

Details of the changes in iOS 26.4

With iOS 26.4, the requirement to use a shared payment method within Family Sharing is no longer in place. Adult members of a group can now add their own payment methods and use them for their purchases.

At the same time, the basic function of purchase approval remains in place. Content will continue to be shared across groups, regardless of the payment method used for the respective purchase.

This change is mentioned in Apple's official release notes and is also included in the updated support documents for purchase approval.

Previous regulation

Prior to iOS 26.4, the use of Family Sharing was clearly regulated:

The family organizer provided a central payment method.
All purchases within the group were processed using this payment method.
Other family members were unable to use their own payment method for purchases.
Alternatively, purchases could be paid for using Apple account credit.

However, this credit had to be topped up independently. Therefore, it was the responsibility of each individual member to ensure they had sufficient credit available so as not to charge the organizer's payment method.

New rule with iOS 26.4

With iOS 26.4, the existing structure is expanded:

The family administrator remains responsible for payment by default.
Adult members can now optionally add their own payment method.
This can be used for personal purchases without restricting content sharing.
Purchase approval must remain enabled in order for content to be shared.

Apple has also adjusted the wording in its documentation accordingly. While previously it stated that the organizer would pay for all purchases, it now adds that other adult members can alternatively use their own payment method.

Practical implications

The changes in iOS 26.4 significantly simplify the use of Family Sharing. Content can still be shared without all financial transactions having to go through a central point.

This reduces organizational effort and makes the function more attractive for groups outside of traditional families, such as friends or adult siblings.

The previously necessary detour via a separate Apple credit becomes less important with the new option, as individual payment methods represent a more direct and simpler solution.

Restrictions remain in place

Despite the changes, certain rules still apply:

Child accounts within Family Sharing will continue to use only the organizer's payment method.
The family administrator retains control over purchase approval.
Sharing content still requires the function to be activated.

This means the existing structure for underage users remains unchanged.
