Studio Display: M5 iPad Pro hints at a major update

The M5 iPad Pro introduces a technical innovation that extends beyond the tablet itself. The updated display options hint at a possible upgrade for the Studio Display, which Apple rumors suggest will be released in early 2026. The iPad's new specifications align remarkably well with what is known about the next generation of Apple's external monitor.

Since its launch in 2022, the Studio Display has been a mainstay of Apple's external monitor lineup. With 5K resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, and integrated features like Center Stage, Spatial Audio, and the A13 Bionic chip, it remains technically sound, but conservative in certain areas. While Macs have supported external 120Hz displays for years, Apple itself has yet to offer a monitor with a refresh rate higher than 60Hz. The new M5 iPad Pro changes this, as it provides an initial indication of a possible future evolution of the Studio Display.

New features of the M5 iPad Pro

The M5 iPad Pro is the first device to support external monitors with refresh rates up to 120Hz and Adaptive Sync. This makes motion smoother and reduces image distortion during fast-paced action. Adaptive Sync is particularly beneficial for gaming, video editing, and tasks requiring quick response times, resulting in less lag. This capability represents a significant technological advancement previously exclusive to the Mac. The timing of its introduction therefore seems deliberate, especially given the concurrent announcements of a new Studio Display.

Hints of a new studio display in 2026

Several rumors support the assumption that Apple is working on a comprehensive update for the Studio Display. A new external display, codenamed J427, has been discovered in Apple code, apparently based on the A19 Pro chip. This chip would give the monitor significantly more processing power than the current A13 Bionic in the existing Studio Display.

Additionally, display expert Ross Young reports that Apple is developing a 27-inch model with Mini LED backlighting. Mini LED would improve contrast, increase brightness, and make color reproduction more accurate. This would be a significant step up from the current 27-inch 5K LCD panel and would bring the Studio Display up to the level of the MacBook Pro, which has used Mini LED since 2021. Combined with a potential 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, the Studio Display would be technically on par with Apple's highest-end displays.

Possible release date

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports that Apple could unveil a next-generation Studio Display or an alternative external Apple Display as early as the beginning of next year. This timing is expected to coincide with the introduction of new models featuring the M5 chip. Whether this is the model slated for 2026 or a separate device remains unclear. However, various sources indicate that Apple is more actively developing its monitor line than in previous years.

The current Studio Display at a glance

Since March 2022, the Studio Display has offered the following features:

  • 27-inch 5K LCD
  • 60 Hz refresh rate
  • 600 nits brightness
  • integrated camera with Center Stage
  • Speakers with Spatial Audio
  • A13 Bionic Chip
  • Hey Siri support
  • Thunderbolt 3 port
  • three USB-C ports
  • Price from 1,749 euros

This equipment makes the Studio Display solid, but no longer quite up-to-date when it comes to high frame rates and more modern display technology.

What the M5 iPad Pro could mean for the Studio Display

The newly introduced support for external 120Hz displays shows that Apple is preparing its devices early for upcoming monitor technologies. It would be unusual for Apple to introduce such a feature without offering a compatible display itself. Combined with the leaked information about the J427 model, the reports about Mini LED, and the predictions for a 120Hz refresh rate, a coherent picture emerges. The next Studio Display will very likely offer a higher refresh rate. However, until the official announcement, this remains speculation.

Everything points to a significantly improved studio display.

The new display capabilities of the M5 iPad Pro and numerous hints from various sources reinforce the assumption that Apple is working on a new Studio Display that will bring significant technological advancements. The combination of Mini LED, a more powerful chip, and a potential 120Hz refresh rate could elevate the monitor to a new level. The direction is clear.
