Apple is kicking off the 2025 holiday season with a new TV spot. The short film, titled "A Critter Carol," combines handcrafted effects with the camera technology of the iPhone 17 Pro. The campaign, released to coincide with the American Thanksgiving holiday, relies on a blend of emotion, nostalgia, and modern Apple technology.
Apple releases a Christmas ad every year, aiming to convey less product presentation and more atmosphere. This year, the focus is on friendship, community, and the idea that creativity, despite increasing AI automation, still needs a human core. "A Critter Carol" builds on this premise, subtly weaving the features of the iPhone 17 Pro into a short story.
„A Critter Carol“ and its plot
The commercial takes place in a snowy forest. There, a group of forest animals finds a lost iPhone 17 Pro. The animals are handcrafted puppets, including a raccoon, a bear, an owl, a deer, a squirrel, and other woodland creatures. They film themselves with the found device while singing a song about friendship. The scene thrives on tranquil visuals, natural movements, and the intricate detail of the puppets.
Later, the actual owner of the iPhone uses his Apple Watch to locate the device via the Find My app. This is how he discovers the recording the animals made with the smartphone. The commercial thus combines technology and everyday life in a simple, easily understandable situation.
Handcrafts at the heart of it all
It's striking that Apple, in a technology-dominated age, consciously focuses on practical effects. The animals were handcrafted and animated by puppeteers. Even the campaign's typography is handmade and printed from wooden blocks. The production thus presents a counterpoint to fully digital or AI-based advertisements and emphasizes the value of traditional craftsmanship.
According to Apple, the entire short film was shot on the iPhone 17 Pro. The fine print indicates that additional hardware and software were used, which is common practice in professional productions. Nevertheless, the smartphone remains the central focus as the main camera.
iPhone 17 Pro camera features
The ad utilizes several features of the new iPhone model. These include 8x optical zoom, Center Stage for selfies, and Dual Capture for simultaneous shooting with the front and rear cameras. These features are subtly integrated into the narrative and demonstrate the device's versatility.
The film was directed by the award-winning Australian filmmaker Mark Molloy. He describes the iPhone 17 Pro as surprisingly powerful, especially in its ability to capture emotions and atmosphere directly with a smartphone.
A look behind the scenes
Apple also released a making-of video. It shows puppeteers working on the figures and how the set was built. The footage also shows the process of analog typography. The combination of modern recording techniques and classic design methods defines the entire style of the campaign.
Apple combines technology with genuine craftsmanship
„A Critter Carol“ showcases how Apple combines technology and creative craftsmanship. The ad utilizes the camera capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro without overshadowing the emotional aspect. In an era where many commercials are digitally produced, Apple consciously focuses on real materials and handcrafted details. The message remains clear: technology supports creative ideas, but doesn't replace them.
