macOS 26.2: The three biggest new features at a glance

macOS 26.2 brings three features that noticeably enhance the Mac in everyday and professional environments. Known as macOS Tahoe 26.2, the update will be released next month and delivers improvements for video calls, computationally intensive workflows, and task organization.

With macOS 26.2, Apple is pursuing a clear approach. The new features are designed to solve practical problems. This includes improved lighting during video calls, increased performance through networked Macs, and reminders that truly can't be missed. The update thus covers three areas that have been waiting for an overhaul for quite some time.

Edge Light for video calls

The Edge Light feature enhances video calls with smart lighting. The effect creates a virtual light along the edge of the display, mimicking a ring light. This makes the face appear brighter and more clearly visible, especially in dark rooms.

The technology goes beyond simple brightness. The Neural Engine detects faces, their position, and their size within the image. The image signal processor then automatically adjusts the lighting to match the surroundings. Edge Light can be activated manually. On Macs manufactured from 2024 onward, it can also be turned on automatically in dark scenes.

A Mac with Apple Silicon is required. Models with the M1 chip and later support the effect. Edge Light works not only with the integrated camera, but also with external cameras and the Apple Studio Display. This ensures consistent light quality regardless of the device.

Mac Cluster with Thunderbolt 5

macOS 26.2 significantly expands the possibilities for professional workflows. Multiple Macs can be connected to form a cluster via Thunderbolt 5, creating a low-latency system with bandwidth of up to 80 gigabits per second. This is particularly interesting for developers and researchers who want to run large AI models or complex calculations locally.

Four Mac Studios, each with up to 512 gigabytes of unified memory, can process models with a trillion parameters more efficiently than many GPU systems, which consume more power. Previous clusters were limited by hubs and slower Thunderbolt speeds, often reaching only 10 gigabits per second. With macOS 26.2, this limitation is removed.

The feature isn't limited to the Mac Studio. The M4 Pro Mac mini, as well as the M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro, also support clustering. Only standard Thunderbolt 5 cables are required; no special hardware is needed. At the same time, MLX, Apple's machine learning framework, gains access to the M5 chip's new neural accelerators. This makes upcoming M5 Ultra systems particularly powerful for AI tasks.

Urgent reminders

The Reminders app on macOS 26.2 and iOS 26.2 is getting a new feature called Urgent Reminders. When a task is created with a due date, it can be marked as urgent. A simple toggle switch for this is located in the details view.

When the reminder time is reached, the connected iPhone or iPad triggers an alarm. The alarm can be postponed by nine minutes or marked as completed immediately. This ensures that no important task is overlooked. The feature works across devices. When setting up an urgent reminder on the Mac for the first time, it displays the necessary settings on the iPhone for the alarm to trigger reliably.

Since the iPhone is usually the device most frequently carried in everyday life, triggering an alarm there attracts more attention. Even though a direct alarm on the Mac would be practical, the chosen solution reliably fulfills its purpose.

macOS 26.2 focuses on clear practical advantages

macOS 26.2 focuses on improvements that are noticeable in everyday use. Edge Light delivers clearer video calls without additional hardware. Thunderbolt 5 clusters open up new possibilities for tasks related to AI and research. Urgent Reminders provide more structure and prevent missed appointments. The update emphasizes practical enhancements and demonstrates how versatile the Mac can become with targeted features.
