Apple releases new firmware for key accessories

Apple has released new firmware for several accessories. These include the 140W USB-C power adapter, the Magic Trackpad 2, the Magic Trackpad USB-C, the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, and the version with Touch ID and a numeric keypad. Since firmware updates for accessories are infrequent, this move is particularly noteworthy, especially since some models haven't received an update in over a year.

Apple accessories generally run reliably, but especially with keyboards, trackpads, and power adapters, the firmware determines performance, reliability, and security. There are no official details about the changes. However, experience shows that such updates tweak aspects like power management, connection stability, latency, hardware compatibility, and security routines. It's particularly interesting that the USB-C versions of the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, released in October 2024, are now receiving their first firmware updates.

Firmware for power supplies

The 140W USB-C power adapter is being updated from firmware version 1.4.73 to 1.4.84. Updates for power adapters typically affect temperature control, power distribution, and communication with devices like iPhones, Macs, and iPads. Fine-tuning is especially important at high charging power levels to keep heat generation and battery stress under control.

Firmware for new USB-C trackpads and keyboards

The USB-C Magic Trackpad originally shipped with firmware 3.1.1 and, after the update, is now at version 3.1.9. The same applies to the USB-C versions of the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, as well as the version with Touch ID and a numeric keypad. They previously ran on firmware 3.1.4 and are now also being updated to 3.1.9. Improvements in connectivity, input precision, and interaction with iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS are expected.

Firmware for older devices

Older models are also being supported. The Magic Trackpad 2 previously had firmware 3.1.1 installed and will now receive version 3.1.8. This update is primarily intended to bring stability and security up to date, ensuring that older hardware works seamlessly with newer software.

Automatic installation

Installation is automatic. As soon as the accessory is actively paired with a device running one of the Apple operating systems, the firmware is updated without any manual intervention. No extra software or special update process is required. The update runs in the background and ensures that the accessory remains reliable in the long term.

Apple quietly optimizes accessories in the background.

With these firmware updates, Apple is bringing several accessories to a more uniform technical standard. Even without official details, it's likely that the focus is on improved stability, security, and performance optimization. The update demonstrates Apple's consistent support for accessories that are used daily and contribute to a seamless user experience. Thanks to automatic installation, the effort required is minimal, while the devices are kept up-to-date in the background.
