Perplexity launches new Mac app with Personal Computer for all Pro users

Perplexity has released a completely new native macOS app, thereby also unlocking its Personal Computer agent feature for all Pro and Max subscribers. The app replaces the previous Mac software and integrates local files, native Mac apps, and the web into a single workflow.

Perplexity is consistently pushing the integration of its AI service with the Mac. Following the iPhone release of the Comet browser in February, the next step is now being taken to Apple's desktop platform: a completely rebuilt Mac app that replaces the previous software. At its core is the Personal Computer feature – an agent-like assistant that, for the first time, runs on every Mac and simultaneously accesses local data, Mac apps, and web services.

What the new Mac app delivers

The app claims to offer a "completely new native Mac experience" and replaces the old Perplexity software, which will remain installable but, according to Perplexity, will soon be discontinued. Users are introduced via an introductory video that explains how Personal Computer works on the Mac.

At the heart of the new app is a central command bar. It can be opened via a universal keyboard shortcut – pressing both Command keys simultaneously brings up the Command Bar. This makes Perplexity a kind of system-wide quick access point for AI-powered research, tasks, and actions, without users having to actively bring the app to the foreground.

Personal computer as a central feature

Personal Computer is Perplexity's agent-based extension and has been rolling out since April. With the new app, the feature is now available to all Pro and Max subscribers. Unlike the original Perplexity Computer, this new version works directly on the user's Mac: It performs tasks across local files, native Mac apps, the web, and Perplexity's secure servers.

The approach is quite ambitious. While traditional chat assistants process requests in an isolated window, Personal Computer breaks down this separation. For example, research can begin in a web source, continue in a local document, and then be transferred to a note or calendar entry via a Mac app – without the user having to manually manage the transition.

How this step fits in

The new app is part of a broader strategy by which Perplexity is systematically rolling out its AI ecosystem across all Apple platforms. Comet launched as an AI browser for macOS in the summer of 2025, followed by the iPhone version in March 2026, with a parallel, gradual rollout to Personal Computer. With the newly introduced Mac app, a circle is completed at the desktop level, where browser, search, and agent functions are now seamlessly integrated.

The ambition extends beyond mere product development. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas recently argued prominently that AI will not make the iPhone obsolete, but rather more valuable – and described Apple Silicon as an undervalued asset for local agent loops. The new Mac app can be seen as practical evidence of this thesis: Instead of focusing on classic chat interfaces, Perplexity aims to prove that agent-based AI works directly within the existing Apple ecosystem.

Where Perplexity stands in Apple's environment

This move is also noteworthy because Apple itself is still working on a more powerful generation of Siri. Until that's available, third-party providers like Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude are filling the gap – with increasingly deep Mac integrations. It's no coincidence that Perplexity is among the most frequently mentioned acquisition targets: Apple is said to have already discussed internal acquisitions of Perplexity or Mistral AI. Whether any concrete steps will result from this remains to be seen – but the independence of Perplexity's roadmap is certainly evident at present.

The new Mac app is available for download now for users; Personal Computer requires a Pro or Max subscription.

Perplexity's Mac strategy is taking clear shape

With its new native app and the release of Personal Computer to all paying users, Perplexity is taking a significant step from a simple search app to a system-level AI tool. The long-term viability of this approach depends on how reliably Personal Computer performs in everyday use – but the direction is clear: away from the chat window and towards an agent layer that runs directly on the Mac.
