MacBook Neo teardown: Surprisingly easy to repair

The MacBook Neo is currently attracting attention not only because of its price and new hardware, but also because of its internal design. The well-known repair platform iFixit has, as is their custom, completely disassembled the device and given it an unusually positive assessment.

The battery is particularly noteworthy: According to iFixit, the MacBook Neo has the most easily accessible MacBook battery in over a decade. Overall, the teardown reveals a significantly more repair-friendly design than many previous Apple laptops.

Apple has frequently been criticized in recent years for the difficulty of repairing MacBooks. Glued-in batteries, hard-to-reach components, and soldered parts often made repairs complicated and expensive.

The MacBook Neo, however, demonstrates a different approach. iFixit describes the laptop's internal components as surprisingly well-organized. In fact, the team even states that they haven't been this impressed with a MacBook since 2012.

One possible explanation for this design change could be an upcoming EU regulation. This regulation stipulates that many portable devices must have user-replaceable batteries by the beginning of 2027. The MacBook Neo could therefore already be prepared for these requirements.

iFixit disassembles the MacBook Neo

For the teardown, iFixit used the more expensive version of the MacBook Neo, priced at €799. This model features a keyboard with Touch ID, but according to iFixit, both versions of the laptop can be opened "suspiciously easily.".

The lower case is still secured with pentalobe screws. These screws are less common than standard screws and require a special screwdriver. However, once the screws are removed, the cover can be easily removed by hand.

Inside, the layout is described by iFixit as "surprisingly sensible." Important components are easily accessible and not unnecessarily hidden under other parts.

The battery: The biggest improvement in the MacBook Neo

The most noticeable difference compared to many previous MacBook generations concerns the battery. In the MacBook Neo, the battery is not glued in, but screwed in. A total of 18 screws must be removed. While this isn't a minimal effort, it nevertheless represents a significant improvement.

The key advantage is that no adhesive is used. This makes replacing or repairing the battery significantly easier. According to iFixit, this is the device's biggest plus.

This makes the MacBook Neo the most accessible battery in a MacBook since 2012.

Easily accessible internal components

Besides the battery, several other components are easily accessible. These include, among others:

  • Speakers
  • Connections
  • the trackpad

These components are not hidden beneath other parts, as is common with many Apple laptops. While some cables need to be disconnected to access deeper components like the motherboard, iFixit describes the overall access as "fairly easy.".

The design doesn't appear as if any parts have been deliberately hidden.

Modular connectors facilitate repairs

Another advantage of the MacBook Neo is the modular design of its individual ports. The USB-C ports are not soldered directly to the motherboard, but are located on separate modules. This means that damaged ports can be replaced without having to replace the entire motherboard.

The same principle applies to the headphone jack, which is also modular in design.

Such solutions significantly reduce repair costs and make it much easier to replace individual components.

The display is much easier to replace

Apple has also implemented a relatively repair-friendly design for the screen. The antenna assembly can be removed relatively easily. Once it's removed and the hinge screws are loosened, the display can practically be folded out.

iFixit compares this process to the mechanism of a framework laptop, known for its modular design. This makes replacing the display significantly easier than with many previous MacBook models.

Simplified design for speakers and trackpad

The MacBook Neo uses side-firing speakers. This design reduces the necessary machining of the casing and simplifies the device's construction. It could also reduce production costs.

Another special feature concerns the trackpad. Apple uses a mechanical trackpad here. This makes the MacBook Neo the first MacBook since 2015 to use this technology again.

The mechanical solution is less expensive to manufacture than the Force Touch trackpads introduced later.

Keyboard can be replaced separately

During the teardown, the keyboard was the last component iFixit removed. It's secured with a total of 41 screws. While this might sound like a lot of work, it has a practical advantage: the keyboard can be removed and replaced separately from the upper case.

This allows for cheaper repairs, as the entire top case does not need to be replaced.

Limitations due to soldered RAM and memory

Despite the many positive aspects, there are also limitations. The RAM and internal storage (SSD) are soldered directly onto the A18 Pro chip. This design is common in modern Apple devices. However, this also means:

  • RAM cannot be upgraded after purchase.
  • SSD storage is not replaceable
  • Repairs to these components are severely limited

From the perspective of ease of repair, this therefore remains a disadvantage.

MacBook Neo repair assessment

Overall, iFixit's verdict is still positive. The MacBook Neo receives a repairability rating of 6 out of 10. For comparison:

  • The 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro received 4 out of 10 points.
  • The M4 MacBook Air received 5 out of 10 points.

This means the MacBook Neo performs better than several current MacBook models.

MacBook Neo: Improved repairability despite some limitations

The iFixit teardown reveals that Apple made several decisions with the MacBook Neo that significantly simplify repairs. In particular, the screw-in battery, modular connectors, and an easily accessible display improve the device's serviceability.

At the same time, typical limitations remain, such as the soldered RAM and storage. Despite these points, iFixit considers the MacBook Neo one of the most repair-friendly MacBooks of recent years.

Should future EU regulations actually require replaceable batteries, this design could be an indication of how future MacBook generations will be built. (Image: Apple)
