Apple has released new software updates for older devices. These are versions iOS 16.7.15, iPadOS 16.7.15, iOS 15.8.7, and iPadOS 15.8.7.
The updates are aimed at older iPhones and iPads that no longer support newer versions of iOS and iPadOS.
Even though older Apple devices no longer receive new features, Apple continues to provide them with important security updates. These smaller updates ensure that older devices remain stable and as secure as possible. This demonstrates once again that Apple often continues to support older devices with software updates for many years.
New Apple updates for older devices
The new updates were released specifically for older devices that cannot update to newer operating system versions.
According to Apple, these updates contain important security fixes designed to close potential vulnerabilities in the system. No new features are included in these updates.
Installing the updates
Installation is done directly via the device settings:
- Open settings
- Select General
- Access software update
The new version can be downloaded and installed there. If automatic updates are enabled, the software will be installed automatically within the next few days.
Apple's long-term update policy
Apple commits to providing security updates for iPhones for at least five years after their release. In many cases, devices are supported for even longer.
One example of this is the iPhone 5s. The device received a software update at the beginning of this year – around 13 years after its release.
