MacBook Neo Reviews: High praise despite clear limitations

The first MacBook Neo reviews have been published, and the overall picture is surprisingly consistent. The reviews so far are predominantly positive, but focus heavily on the compromises Apple had to make to build this affordable model.

Even before its release, the device faced criticism regarding its limitations. However, now that the first testers have put the MacBook Neo through its paces in everyday use, a more nuanced picture has emerged. Many reviews reach a similar conclusion: the MacBook Neo isn't for everyone, but it could be the right Mac for many users.

Apple deliberately positioned the MacBook Neo as an affordable entry point into the Mac world. The device is not intended to replace a MacBook Pro, nor to compete with high-performance models. Instead, it is aimed at a different target group.

Almost all reviews emphasize that Apple has cut features to significantly reduce the price. At the same time, initial experiences show that many of these compromises are hardly problematic for the device's target audience. This is precisely why many reviews focus less on whether the MacBook Neo is perfect and more on whether Apple has made the right cost-cutting measures.

Discussion about RAM and performance

A key point of criticism before the market launch was the 8 GB of RAM. Some commentators claimed beforehand that the MacBook Neo would have difficulty running multiple applications simultaneously.

Tech YouTuber iJustine responds very clearly to this criticism in her review. She begins her video by saying that she usually starts her reviews happy and enthusiastic, but this time she's annoyed. Her anger is directed at critics who claim the MacBook Neo can't run several apps "without crying."

In her test, she then demonstrates how the device performs in everyday use and shows that typical tasks run smoothly. At the same time, she makes it clear that this MacBook is not intended for professional users. In her opinion, the device is primarily aimed at casual users, students, small businesses, or children getting their first computer.

Criticism of the performance, but understanding for Apple's decisions

Other reviews also point out the limitations of the MacBook Neo. Wired magazine, for example, writes that users might become frustrated after purchasing the device.

It also states that Apple has made several compromises that could give the impression that the company is exploiting the strong appeal of a €699 MacBook.

Despite this criticism, the overall conclusion is not negative. Wired emphasizes that practical experience with the device shows that Apple has made the necessary cost-cutting measures in the right places.

A deliberately simple MacBook

Ars Technica also describes the MacBook Neo as a device with clear weaknesses. The review points out that it lacks some features that have been standard on the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro for years.

The performance verdict is equally sobering. According to Ars Technica, in many benchmarks, the Neo is the slowest Mac Apple has released since the beginning of the Apple Silicon era. This even includes the original M1 Mac.

Nevertheless, the overall conclusion remains positive. Ars Technica writes that Apple has mostly made the right decision and removed features without significantly impacting anything essential.

Compromises that are hardly relevant for many users

Another review in Stuff magazine also describes the compromises, but sees no major problem in them.

The article states that the limitations of the MacBook Neo are hardly relevant for the vast majority of users. For many buyers, the device is therefore an absolute bargain that doesn't require much deliberation.

Stuff also points out that the MacBook Neo could potentially have an impact on the entire laptop market. A particularly affordable Mac could prompt Windows laptop manufacturers to develop their devices more efficiently and effectively in order to remain competitive.

A laptop for everyday use

CNN also rates the MacBook Neo as a very practical device for everyday use. They even mention that it's currently the laptop you would recommend to your own father, for example.

At the same time, the report looks a little into the future. CNN expresses hope that Apple might eventually release a version of the MacBook Neo with a larger screen.

At the moment, the device is primarily aimed at users who are looking for a good 13-inch laptop and don't want to constantly think about budget or financing.

Processing is a clear advantage over many Windows laptops

GQ also speaks positively about the device, describing the MacBook Neo in its British edition simply as "absurdly cheap."

While many Windows laptops offer better specifications on paper for the same price, GQ points out that these devices often don't achieve the same build quality as Apple's laptop.

It is precisely in this respect that the MacBook Neo stands out significantly from many competing products, according to the report.

MacBook Neo: A more affordable Mac with the right compromises

The first MacBook Neo reviews paint a remarkably consistent picture. Although the device has clear limitations, many reviewers do not see this as a fundamental problem.

Apple deliberately cut features to offer a particularly affordable MacBook. However, according to most reviews, these savings were made in the right places.

The result is a laptop that isn't intended for professional users, but could be an attractive option for many other users. Students, beginners, families, or small businesses could find the MacBook Neo to be exactly the computer they need.

The initial impression from the reviews is therefore clear: The MacBook Neo may not be suitable for everyone – but for many people, it's exactly the right Mac. (Image: Apple)
