iOS 27 is primarily notable for its new features – but beneath the surface lies a consistent focus on speed, applied system-wide. One of the beneficiaries is, surprisingly, the power saving mode, which was previously considered a bottleneck.
On the keynote list with its hundreds of new features surrounding iOS 27, some items can easily get lost – including two concerning Low Power Mode. This year, in addition to the visible features, Apple has noticeably focused on bug fixes and performance improvements, and this focus extends to the mode that lengthens battery life by throttling background processes and performance.
What Apple calls power saving mode
The long list of changes includes two specific improvements for power saving mode: The camera starts up faster in activated mode, and it consumes less power at the same time. Both points address a weakness that many users are familiar with – the camera's sluggish opening, especially when the battery is already low.
Beyond these two points, the mode also seems to run more smoothly in general. The speed boost is therefore not limited to the camera, but affects the overall experience in power-saving mode.
System-wide speed gains as a basis
This is all framed by a series of speed improvements that Apple already highlighted in its WWDC keynote. These include up to 30 percent faster app launches, up to 70 percent faster loading of new photos in the Photos app, and up to 80 percent faster AirDrop transfers. These optimizations apply system-wide – and lay the foundation for even throttled modes like Low Power Mode to benefit.
First impressions from the first beta
Initial feedback on the iOS 27 developer beta reveals a significant difference compared to its predecessor: Under iOS 26, the iPhone sometimes felt sluggish and difficult to use in low-power mode. While the refresh rate still drops in iOS 27, these observations indicate that the device remains consistently usable.
However, experiences vary depending on the device. While newer iPhones noticeably benefit, users of older models continue to report stuttering in Low Power Mode. Since iOS 27 is only at the beginning of its beta cycle, further optimizations are expected in upcoming test versions, from which Low Power Mode in particular should benefit. Anyone wishing to try out the preview version should be aware of the steps for installing the Developer Beta and the associated risks.
The speed focus also reaches the power saving mode
With iOS 27, Low Power Mode evolves from a necessary compromise into an option that feels significantly more pleasant in everyday use. Faster camera access, lower power consumption, and an overall smoother performance make the mode more practical – and the fine-tuning through the ongoing beta testing has only just begun.
