With the release candidate of iOS 26.2, the next interim version of the current iPhone generation reaches its crucial development phase. The RC version reveals which features and improvements Apple will officially release in December. After three betas, Apple is focusing primarily on stability, system optimizations, and final preparations for the widespread rollout in the release candidate. iPadOS 26.2, macOS 26.2, watchOS 26.2, tvOS 26.2, and visionOS 26.2 are also available as RCs.
iOS 26.2 has evolved during its beta phase into an update that goes far beyond simple bug fixes. Apple has made numerous improvements, expanded existing features, and added new options. The Release Candidate now summarizes these changes. The focus is clearly on stability and final adjustments before the rollout to all devices.
Live translation with AirPods: EU launch confirmed
One of the most important features of iOS 26.2 is AI-powered live translation with compatible AirPods. The feature works completely offline and supports nine languages. Due to European DMA regulations, it hadn't yet launched in the EU. With iOS 26.2, the official launch now takes place across Europe. The feature is particularly useful for users who want to communicate in real time without an internet connection.
AirDrop Codes: Temporary shares for 30 days
iOS 26.2 expands AirDrop with a new method for temporary sharing. Using AirDrop Codes, two devices can be paired for up to 30 days without having to save a contact. After entering the code, the devices become visible to each other for the duration of the 30-day period. All active codes are managed centrally in the Settings app. This addition fills a gap between the existing options and simplifies sharing in one-off or short-term situations.
Memories with real alarms
The Reminders app has been enhanced with a new alarm function. Reminders can now be triggered like an alarm clock, including an audible signal and snooze option. The lock screen displays relevant options such as stop or postpone, while reminder alarms are color-coded to distinguish them from traditional alarm clocks. This new feature makes the app more reliable in everyday use and prevents important tasks from going unnoticed.
More control on the lock screen thanks to Liquid Glass
In iOS 26.2, the lock screen gains precise control over the clock's transparency. A smooth Liquid Glass slider replaces the previous two display options. This allows for better adaptation of the time to different wallpapers. The slider affects only the clock element and complements the system-wide Liquid Glass design introduced with iOS 26.
Tables in Freeform
The Freeform app has been significantly enhanced with new features. Tables can now be placed directly on the workspace and customized flexibly. They can be filled with text and lists, making the app a valuable addition for planning, brainstorming, and teamwork. This new feature integrates seamlessly into the existing layout and improves clarity in more complex projects.
Podcasts app with three key improvements
Several areas of the podcast app have been redesigned. Automatic chapters make navigating lengthy episodes easier. Mentioned podcasts are displayed directly at the corresponding point in the transcript. The "From this episode" page provides a clear overview of all related links. This gives the app more orientation and context without requiring any additional work from producers.
Revised sleep assessment on the Apple Watch
watchOS 26.2 introduces a new sleep score scale. The categories have been reorganized to provide more realistic results. The previous "Excellent" category has been replaced with "Very High." The rating ranges have also been adjusted to better account for nighttime interruptions.
New options in Apple Games
Apple Games received several small but useful enhancements in iOS 26.2. Library filters now allow sorting by storage size, games played by friends, or titles with challenge support. Additionally, controller navigation within the app has been improved, and challenge scores now update in real time.
CarPlay with new messaging option
For the first time, CarPlay allows users to hide pinned conversations from the Messages app. This setting only affects the in-car display, resulting in a significantly quieter and clearer message list while driving.
Modernized design for the Measure app
The Measure app has received a comprehensive update. The spirit level now uses a liquid glass design with dynamic bubbles. In Beta 3, readability was also improved by ensuring that numbers are no longer obscured at certain viewing angles.
Multitasking on the iPad is becoming more familiar
iPadOS 26.2 brings back essential multitasking features that many have long missed. Apps can once again be dragged directly from the Dock or Spotlight into Split View or Slide Over. This gesture has been one of the most important tools on the iPad for years and fills a significant gap that iPadOS 26 initially left.
Regional changes in Japan
iOS 26.2 enables alternative voice assistants via the side button for the first time in Japan. The feature is based on App Intents and is part of new legal requirements in the country. To activate it, the Apple ID and location must be in Japan. The option is available worldwide in the system, but can only be used in Japan.
Outlook on the final rollout
With the Release Candidate, iOS 26.2 is technically almost complete. The final release is expected next week. No new features are included in the RC, as Apple uses this phase for stability testing and performance optimization. The existing changes are already extensive and demonstrate how much Apple continues to develop even minor updates.
