Apple TV has released the full trailer for "Lucky," a heist thriller starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a con artist on the run. The seven-part series premieres on July 15 and joins a packed summer lineup.
With "Lucky," Apple TV fills one of the most prominent gaps in its summer lineup: Anya Taylor-Joy, recently known primarily for her film roles in "Furiosa" and "Dune: Part Two," takes on a major series role for the first time since her breakthrough on Netflix. The new trailer provides a first detailed look at the pace of production—and makes it clear why the series is among the most anticipated titles in Apple's strongest summer lineup to date. The footage was released along with the final release date, thus confirming the key details of the limited series.
When "Lucky" starts and how the episodes will be released
The first two episodes will premiere worldwide on Apple TV on Wednesday, July 15. A new episode will then be released every Wednesday until the series concludes on August 19. "Lucky" comprises a total of seven episodes and is designed as a self-contained miniseries – a format Apple has repeatedly used in recent years for high-profile, standalone productions.
The weekly release schedule stretches the series over a good five weeks, meaning the finale won't air until mid-August. Apple TV is available in Germany for €9.99 per month and is included in the Apple One bundle subscription starting at €19.95.
What the series is about
The story centers on a con artist named Lucky, who goes on the run after a multi-million dollar heist. The robbery goes wrong, and she finds herself pursued by two sides: the FBI on one side and a ruthless crime boss on the other. Lucky fights not only for her survival but also for a way out of her predicament. The trailer shows her in constant motion for much of the film – changing disguises and fleeing through a web of pursuers.
One of the main antagonists is FBI agent Billie Rand, who relentlessly pursues Lucky. The dynamic between hunted and investigator forms the dramatic core of the series.
The cast around Anya Taylor-Joy
Taylor-Joy plays the title role and also serves as an executive producer. She is joined by a large ensemble cast: Annette Bening, Timothy Olyphant, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor – who plays FBI agent Billie Rand – Drew Starkey, Clifton Collins Jr., and William Fichtner. Apple has thus opted for a mix of established character actors and younger faces.
Behind the scenes: Template and production team
The series is based on the novel of the same name by Marissa Stapley, which made the New York Times bestseller list and was chosen as a title for Reese Witherspoon's book club. Jonathan Tropper, known for creating, writing, and co-producing the series, is responsible for the adaptation. He is also known for creating "Your Friends & Neighbors." Cassie Pappas serves as co-showrunner.
"Lucky" is produced by Apple Studios in conjunction with Hello Sunshine, Reese Witherspoon’s production company, which also serves as an executive producer alongside Lauren Neustadter. Taylor-Joy contributes through her own production company, LadyKiller. The pilot episode was directed by Jonathan van Tulleken, who is also listed as an executive producer.
Taylor-Joy's second appearance at Apple
For Taylor-Joy, "Lucky" marks her second collaboration with Apple. She previously starred in the film "The Gorge," released last year, which became one of the service's biggest box office hits. Her major television breakthrough came with Netflix's "The Queen's Gambit"—"Lucky" now marks her return to television in a leading role.
Apple's summer program is getting its next star attraction
The release date places "Lucky" right in the middle of an already packed schedule: The same window also coincides with the premiere of Ted Lasso Season 4 on August 5th, meaning Apple TV will be releasing new episodes of various shows weekly for weeks. For Apple, the series is therefore another element in a summer strategy that relies on high-profile casts and a steady stream of new episodes. (Image: Apple)
