Apple has officially announced a long-awaited move. The company will be working closely with Google to build the next generation of Siri and other Apple intelligence features on a new technological foundation. At the heart of this collaboration is Google's Gemini AI model. What initially sounded like a limited partnership has turned out to be a comprehensive, multi-year deal of strategic importance to Apple.
Back in the fall, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reported on advanced talks between Apple and Google. At the time, the discussions focused primarily on an improved version of Siri, based on a modified Gemini model. Now, both companies have officially confirmed this collaboration and revealed concrete details for the first time.
The official agreement between Apple and Google
In a joint statement, Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration. The next generation of Apple Foundation models will be built on the Gemini models and Google's cloud technology. This technological foundation will enable future Apple intelligence features, including a significantly more personalized version of Siri, which is expected to be released later this year.
Apple explains that, after intensive evaluation, it has concluded that Google's AI technology currently provides the most powerful foundation for its own Foundation Models. At the same time, the company emphasizes that Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and via private cloud computing.
Larger scope than initially expected
A key point of the announcement is the scope of the collaboration. Google's Gemini models will not only be used for Siri, but also for other Apple intelligence features. This means it's about more than just a single voice assistant.
This decision suggests that several Apple product categories could receive significant AI improvements. Specifically mentioned are the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro, and Apple Watch. Apple Intelligence as a whole is likely to undergo a more substantial technological upgrade than previously anticipated.
According to Apple, data privacy remains unchanged
In its statement, Apple places particular emphasis on data privacy. Existing data protection standards will remain fully intact within this partnership. According to Apple, Google will not have access to user data.
Instead, Google provides the underlying technology, while Apple integrates it with its own security measures and protection mechanisms. The processing of sensitive data remains on the device or within Apple's own cloud infrastructure. In this way, Apple is attempting to secure its well-known position as a privacy-oriented provider, even in the age of AI.
Why public announcement plays a role
It's noteworthy that Apple and Google are openly communicating their partnership. Both companies are putting their reputations at risk. Errors or weaknesses in future Siri versions and other AI functions can no longer be attributed solely to Apple.
If the new features prove successful, both brands will benefit. If they fall short of expectations, Apple and Google will share the responsibility. This transparency distinguishes the deal from previous, more discreet technology partnerships.
Room for Apple's own AI development
Despite the multi-year contract, Apple is not fully committed to Google. The collaboration does not preclude Apple from continuing to develop its own internal AI models in parallel. Behind the scenes, Apple can continue working on alternative or complementary solutions and become more independent in the long term.
Should the collaboration prove successful, there is also the possibility of expanding or extending the partnership.
Apple is relying on a combination of its own strengths and Google technology for its AI efforts
The new deal between Apple and Google marks an important step for Apple Intelligence. The combination of Google's AI expertise and Apple's hardware, software, and data privacy strategy appears well-considered and pragmatic. For Apple, the collaboration means a technological acceleration; for Google, a stronger presence within the Apple ecosystem. Ultimately, users could benefit most if Siri and other features become more reliable, intelligent, and practical for everyday use.
