Apple has released iOS 26.3.1 and iPadOS 26.3.1. These are minor updates to the iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 operating systems. The new versions were released approximately three weeks after iOS 26.3 and iPadOS 26.3.

The updates primarily include bug fixes and support for new Apple hardware. In parallel, Apple also released macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 and a firmware update for the new Studio Display and Studio Display XDR. All updates are related to the launch of the new displays, which are already available for pre-order and will be released in mid-March.

Updates like iOS 26.3.1 are so-called maintenance updates. They are released between major version releases and generally focus on stability, compatibility, and minor bug fixes.

In this particular case, Apple is preparing its software for new hardware. Besides improvements to the mobile operating system, the update also ensures that iPhones, iPads, and Macs work correctly with the upcoming Apple displays. At the same time, development of the next major versions is already underway, as Apple is currently testing iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 in a beta phase.

Release of iOS 26.3.1 and iPadOS 26.3.1

Apple has released a minor software update, iOS 26.3.1 and iPadOS 26.3.1, for compatible iPhones and iPads. This new version follows approximately three weeks after the earlier rollout of iOS 26.3 and iPadOS 26.3.

Installation is performed wirelessly directly via the device, as usual. Updates can be downloaded and installed using the following method:

  • Open settings
  • Select General
  • Access software update

The new version will be displayed automatically as soon as it is available for the respective device.

New features and changes in the update

According to Apple's official release notes, iOS 26.3.1 brings two main changes. Firstly, the update adds support for new Apple displays:

  • Studio Display
  • Studio Display XDR

Secondly, the update includes several bug fixes. Apple does not provide specific details about the corrected issues. This is common with minor maintenance updates, as such versions often contain various internal stability improvements and minor system fixes.

No new features or major changes to the user interface are associated with iOS 26.3.1.

macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 will be released simultaneously

In addition to the update for iPhone and iPad, Apple has also released macOS Tahoe 26.3.1. This is also a minor maintenance update for the Mac operating system macOS Tahoe, which was released in September of last year. The new version is released approximately three weeks after macOS Tahoe 26.3.

Mac users can install the update via System Preferences. The download is available via the following menu item:

  • Open System Preferences
  • Select software update

Here too, the focus is on supporting the new Apple displays. According to the release notes, macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 expands compatibility with the new Studio Display as well as the Studio Display XDR.

Firmware update for Studio Display and Studio Display XDR

Apple has also released a firmware update for the Studio Display and the Studio Display XDR. This update is version 26.3.

The firmware is exclusively for the new Studio Display models and is not available for the older Studio Display.

The installation happens automatically as soon as the display is connected to a Mac. The update can be checked and installed via System Preferences.

  • Open System Preferences
  • Access software update

This ensures that the displays can be operated with the latest firmware right from the start of sales.

Market launch and price of the new displays

The Studio Display and the Studio Display XDR are now available for pre-order. The official market launch is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11th.

According to Apple, prices start at €1,699. With support for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, Apple ensures that the displays are fully integrated into the existing Apple ecosystem at launch.

Outlook on upcoming updates

While iOS 26.3.1 primarily fixes bugs and supports new hardware, Apple is already working on the next major version of the operating system.

iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 are currently in beta testing. These updates are expected to be released in the spring and will likely bring additional features and further improvements for iPhones and other devices.

iOS 26.3.1 brings support for new Apple hardware

With iOS 26.3.1 and iPadOS 26.3.1, Apple releases a minor maintenance update that primarily includes bug fixes and support for new hardware. The focus is on preparing for the Studio Display and Studio Display XDR, which will go on sale in mid-March.

macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 and a firmware update for the new displays are also being released. This ensures that iPhones, iPads, Macs, and the new monitors work seamlessly together from the start.
