"Steve Jobs in Exile": The book about humiliation and discipline

Steve Jobs is considered a defining figure in the history of technology. His major achievements at Apple are usually the focus: the iPod, iPhone, iPad, and the company's rise to become the world's most valuable corporation. However, the twelve years Steve Jobs spent outside of Apple receive less attention.

With his new book, "Steve Jobs in Exile – The Untold Story of Steve Jobs's Wilderness Years – and the Creation of a Legend," journalist Geoffrey Cain presents a detailed account of precisely this period. The work illuminates the time between Jobs's dismissal from Apple and his subsequent return – a period marked by setbacks, financial crises, and personal growth.

The timing of the release was deliberate. Earlier this week marked the 71st anniversary of Steve Jobs' birth. At the same time, Apple's 50th anniversary is approaching. Numerous events, releases, and tributes are taking place around these two occasions.

The Computer History Museum is hosting a special Apple@50 event to celebrate Apple's impact on the history of personal computers. Journalist David Pogue has also written a book about Apple's first five decades, which is scheduled for release in March.

"Steve Jobs in Exile" now joins this field. The book will be released on May 19th and focuses on a period that is central to understanding Steve Jobs and the subsequent development of Apple.

The years in exile: NeXT and the "Wilderness Years"

The book focuses on the twelve years Steve Jobs spent after leaving Apple. Geoffrey Cain describes this time as the "Wilderness Years" - years in the wilderness.

After his split with Apple, Steve Jobs founded the company NeXT. This period was by no means a straightforward success story. Instead, it was characterized by:

  • spectacular failures
  • massive economic problems
  • a threatened or almost actual insolvency
  • public and corporate humiliation

Cain describes how these setbacks were crucial. The wunderkind, considered visionary but impulsive, evolved into a significantly more disciplined entrepreneur. During this time, Steve Jobs learned to lead in a more structured way, to think more strategically, and to build organizations more efficiently.

Unpublished materials and exclusive insights

A key feature of "Steve Jobs in Exile" is its exceptional access to sources. Geoffrey Cain was able to draw on previously unpublished materials, including:

  • Never-before-seen footage of meetings at NeXT
  • private company documents
  • new interviews with close colleagues and key players from Jobs' circle

These documents and conversations provide a detailed reconstruction of internal processes at NeXT. They show how Steve Jobs dealt with pressure, setbacks, and internal conflicts, and how his leadership style changed over the years.

According to the book, the experiences at NeXT transformed the "bold wunderkind" into a mature business genius. The period of failure is described as a necessary prerequisite for his later comeback.

The path back to Apple and the foundation of later successes

Steve Jobs' time at NeXT didn't end in isolation, but led directly to his return to Apple. When Apple acquired NeXT, he returned to the company he had once co-founded.

NeXT's technological developments, particularly in software, later formed the basis for key Apple products. This led to the creation of devices such as:

  • iPod
  • iPhone
  • iPad

These products not only changed Apple, but shaped entire industries. Geoffrey Cain argues that the discipline, strategic clarity, and technical foundation from the NeXT years were crucial to this success. Without the period of failure, the subsequent comeback in this form would hardly have been conceivable.

Voices from the immediate circle

The book is supplemented by contributions from two colleagues. The foreword is by Dan'l Lewin, co-founder of NeXT, who retired after nearly a decade as CEO of the Computer History Museum. The afterword was written by Ed Catmull, who co-founded Pixar with Steve Jobs in 1986.

These perspectives contextualize the events from a personal point of view and complement Cain's research with direct experiences from people who worked closely with Steve Jobs.

Publication and classification

„"Steve Jobs in Exile" will be released on May 19 and is available for pre-order now. The book contains new interviews and previously unpublished material, providing a comprehensive look at his twelve years away from Apple.

In the context of Steve Jobs' 71st birthday and Apple's upcoming 50th anniversary, this work fits into a series of recent publications and events. While other books and events primarily focus on Apple's success story, Geoffrey Cain concentrates on the period of uncertainty and failure.

Steve Jobs: The comeback began in failure

Steve Jobs' story is often told as a linear success story. "Steve Jobs in Exile" paints a more nuanced picture. His years at NeXT were marked by setbacks, financial risks, and public criticism. At the same time, they laid the foundation for one of the most remarkable comebacks in business history.

The illustration makes it clear that Steve Jobs' development as a leader was possible not despite, but because of, these difficult years. Anyone who wants to understand Apple's later dominance and the creation of the iPod, iPhone, and iPad cannot ignore this period. You can find more book recommendations about Apple here!
