Apple acquires AI startup for optics and photonics

Apple has acquired the assets of the startup invrs.io and hired its founder, according to an official notification to the European Union. invrs.io is a one-man company specializing in AI-powered design in the fields of photonics and optics. While the acquisition is small in size, it could have significant technological implications, particularly for future Apple products such as the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro.

Apple is known for strategically acquiring expertise when it is of key importance. Particularly in the hardware sector, Apple has relied for years on its own technologies and the integration of essential competencies into its own company.

The acquisition of invrs.io fits this pattern. Even though it's just a startup with a single employee, its focus is on a technologically sensitive area: the AI-powered design of optical components. For Apple, this is a core field.

Apple buys one-man AI startup

As MacRumors reports, Apple informed the European Union in October of last year that it would "acquire certain assets of invrs.io LLC and hire the company's sole shareholder and employee".

invrs.io consisted of exactly one person: its founder , Martin Schubert. With the acquisition, both the company's assets and Schubert himself become part of Apple.

Apple also stated that invrs.io has developed open-source frameworks for photonics research. These frameworks provide, among other things:

  • standardized simulation tasks
  • Tools for optimization
  • a public ranking for benchmarking and comparing design results

This meant that the startup offered not only pure software solutions, but also a structured environment for comparing and evaluating design approaches.

The founder: Experience at Meta, Google and Micron

Before founding invrs.io, Martin Schubert worked as a research scientist at Meta. Prior to that, he spent over a decade at Google and Micron, where he focused on advanced display, chip, and optics technologies.

His professional background lies precisely in the areas that are crucial for Apple products: displays, semiconductors, and optical systems. With this acquisition, Apple is not only bringing technology into the company, but also many years of experience in these fields.

invrs.io's focus: AI-driven design in optics

On its GitHub page, invrs.io clearly describes its goal: to advance AI-driven design, initially focusing on optics. Optics plays a central role in numerous technology fields, including:

  • Components for AR and VR systems
  • Data centers
  • autonomous vehicles
  • further high-tech applications

invrs.io aimed to create an ecosystem accessible to diverse disciplines – from AI scientists and optimization researchers to optical designers. The company's open-source projects include, among others:

  • standardized design challenges
  • Optimization tools
  • a public ranking for comparing design results

The core objective was to use AI to simulate and optimize the behavior of light in complex structures. Such simulations are essential in photonics, as physical prototypes are often expensive and time-consuming.

Why photonics is relevant for Apple

Photonics is the science of designing and developing components that generate, manipulate, or measure light. For Apple, this field is relevant in several product categories, including:

  • Camera systems
  • Displays
  • Sensors
  • LiDAR scanner

Especially in devices like the iPhone, iPad or Apple Vision Pro, optical components are crucial for image quality, depth detection and energy efficiency.

The tools from invrs.io, which apparently use AI to simulate and optimize light behavior in complex structures, could help Apple further develop such components. This applies to both existing products and upcoming, as yet unannounced devices.

Unclear plans, clear strategic direction

It is not yet known exactly how Apple will use invrs.io's technologies. Likewise, it is unclear what role Martin Schubert will play within the company.

However, it is clear that Apple is expanding its expertise in AI-powered hardware design with this acquisition. The combination of artificial intelligence, photonics, and optics suggests that Apple intends to increasingly optimize the development of physical components using software and data.

Apple invests in AI-powered photonics expertise

The acquisition of invrs.io may seem small at first glance, as it is a one-man startup. However, it affects a technologically central field.

Apple is thus securing expertise in AI-driven photonics and optics, including open-source frameworks, simulations, and benchmarking tools. At the same time, an experienced developer with experience at Meta, Google, and Micron is joining the company.
