MacBook leak reveals tough cost-cutting measures

Apple is apparently close to unveiling a new, more affordable MacBook. There has been speculation for some time about an entry-level model, expected to be priced below the MacBook Air. Since a lower price almost always comes with technical compromises, specific limitations are already being discussed. A leaker has now published eight possible limitations of the new MacBook. The information comes from an internal version of Apple's Kernel Debug Kit for a macOS Tahoe beta, which surfaced online last year.

The information comes from the same source who previously claimed that the next Studio Display could have a 90Hz refresh rate and that the upcoming iPad mini would be equipped with an A20 Pro chip. Furthermore, other predictions regarding future Apple products were made.

Many of these claims are currently unconfirmed (via Weibo). Verification will only be possible once the corresponding devices are released.

The leaked files are considered genuine. However, some of the now-published restrictions are not based directly on clear entries in the files, but rather on the leaker's interpretations. Therefore, the information should be viewed with a degree of skepticism.

The eight alleged limitations of the new MacBook

Lower maximum display brightness

The more affordable MacBook is expected to offer a lower maximum display brightness than the MacBook Air. While the Air reaches a brightness of up to 500 nits, the new model could fall short of this value. Specific figures have not been provided.

No True Tone

According to a leak, the new MacBook will apparently do without True Tone. This feature automatically adjusts the color temperature and intensity of the display to the ambient light. Without True Tone, the color reproduction remains static.

No storage options with 1 TB or 2 TB

The new MacBook will reportedly be offered exclusively with 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. A 128 GB version may also be available for educational institutions.

Storage options with 1TB or 2TB, as available in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, will not be available.

Slower SSD speeds

The base model is said to have lower read and write speeds for its flash memory than current MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models.

One possible reason given is that Apple might only be able to use a single NAND chip. This would reduce production costs but would directly impact the SSD's speed.

No fast charging function

According to an informant, the new MacBook may not support fast charging. Compared to other current models, charging the battery could therefore take longer.

No backlit keyboard

Another limitation concerns the keyboard. It may not be backlit. This would be a significant difference compared to higher-priced models, especially in poor lighting conditions.

No support for high-impedance headphones

Mac models released since 2021 typically support high-impedance headphones directly via the 3.5 mm jack.

The cheaper MacBook apparently does not offer this support. High-quality headphones with high impedance therefore cannot be used without an additional amplifier.

No N1 chip for modern radio standards

Particularly noteworthy is the apparent omission of Apple's N1 chip. This special chip is used in all iPhone 17 and iPhone Air models and supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

Apple states that the N1 chip also improves the overall performance and reliability of features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop. The less expensive MacBook will reportedly use a MediaTek chip for wireless connectivity.

Further technical details about the MacBook

In addition to the eight restrictions, further specifications are also mentioned.

  • The new MacBook is expected to be equipped with the A18 Pro chip, which is also used in the iPhone 16 Pro. An M-series chip is not expected to be used.
  • Based on the known specifications of the A18 Pro, it can be assumed that the MacBook will be equipped with 8 GB of RAM.
  • The display is expected to have a size of 12.9 inches, making it smaller than many current models.
  • The device appears to use standard USB-C ports. Faster Thunderbolt ports are not expected to be included.

Colors in the style of the iBook

Rumors suggest the new MacBook will be released in eye-catching color variations. Yellow, green, blue, and pink are mentioned.

This concept is reminiscent of the iBook from the early 2000s, which was also available in striking colors. This approach could particularly appeal to younger target groups or the education sector.

Planned presentation

Media representatives will be able to try out the more affordable MacBook at so-called "Apple Experience" events in New York, London, and Shanghai. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4th, at 9:00 AM Eastern Time (3:00 PM CET).

A live stream of the presentation is apparently not planned. Instead, Apple is expected to announce the new MacBook via press release.

MacBook as an entry-level model with clear compromises

The new MacBook is expected to be positioned as a significantly cheaper entry-level model. Information available so far suggests clear cost savings in the display, storage options, charging capability, keyboard, audio support, and wireless connectivity.

At the same time, the A18 Pro chip, the compact 12.9-inch display and the possible color variants suggest a distinct positioning within the product range.

Whether all the aforementioned limitations will prove true remains to be seen. While the authenticity of the leaked files is beyond question, the interpretation of the details comes from a source with no proven track record. A definitive assessment will therefore only be possible after the official unveiling of the MacBook. (Image: Shutterstock / Farknot Architect)
