iPhone Flip: Prototype apparently already tested

Apple is apparently on the verge of one of the biggest design changes in iPhone history. The first foldable iPhone is expected this fall. But alongside this model, there are increasing indications that another device is in development: the so-called iPhone Flip.

A new supply chain leak suggests that Apple has already officially tested a foldable, flip-style iPhone. It's still unclear whether the device will actually go into mass production. What is clear, however, is that Apple isn't limiting itself to just one foldable form factor.

Foldable smartphones are no longer an experiment. Other manufacturers offer devices in both book-style and classic flip designs. Apple, however, has held back so far.

This is apparently changing in several stages. First, a foldable iPhone in a book-like design, often referred to as the iPhone Fold, is expected to be released. In parallel, Apple seems to be exploring a second concept: a square, foldable iPhone in a flip format. The iPhone Flip would thus be a more compact alternative to the larger Fold model.

The first foldable iPhone is coming this fall

This fall, one of the most radical new iPhone models ever is expected. Rumors suggest it will be a foldable, book-style device. This design opens like a small book and offers a larger display inside.

With this move, Apple would officially enter the foldable smartphone market. The iPhone Fold is considered the first major test run in this new product category.

Hints of a second folding design: The iPhone Flip

While much revolves around the iPhone Fold, more and more hints of another project are emerging.

Journalist Mark Gurman recently reported that Apple is "considering" a square, foldable iPhone. This would be a flip design that folds vertically and is particularly compact when closed.

Now, a new leak suggests that the development may be further advanced than previously thought.

Supply chain leak: Tests already conducted

Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital, known for information from Apple's supply chain, has published an update. According to his post, Apple has officially tested a foldable iPhone in a "flip" style.

The exact scope of these tests was not described in detail. Likewise, it is unclear how far along the development actually is. Crucially, however, this is not merely a theoretical consideration, but apparently a tested hardware concept.

However, a test doesn't automatically mean that the iPhone Flip will go into mass production. Apple regularly tests various prototypes and product ideas, many of which never reach the market.

Possible timeframe for the iPhone Flip

If the iPhone Flip is officially included in Apple's product planning, a market launch is not expected until autumn 2027 at the earliest.

However, a later release date is considered more likely. 2028, or even later, is currently seen as a more realistic estimate. Apple typically proceeds cautiously with new product categories, only launching new form factors when the technology and production are considered mature.

The iPhone Flip could become part of the portfolio in the long term

The iPhone Flip is not yet a confirmed product, but several sources indicate that Apple is actively working on such a concept. While the book-style iPhone Fold is expected this fall, Apple appears to be simultaneously exploring a second, more compact folding design.

A leak from the supply chain confirms testing of a Flip model. Whether this will result in a market-ready device remains to be seen. Should Apple pursue the project further, a market launch would be no earlier than 2027, but more likely in 2028 or later.
