iOS 26 Tricks: 26 small innovations with a big impact

With iOS 26, Apple released an update in September that's far more than just a collection of small improvements. Alongside the major features, there are a number of functions that were quietly introduced and can make a real difference in everyday life. Many of them go unnoticed because they weren't widely announced. Those who take the time to discover these hidden possibilities can get much more out of their iPhone.

iOS 26 builds on the experience of recent versions and brings not only visual tweaks but also useful tools for greater convenience, efficiency, and security. Some innovations are tiny and easy to overlook, while others feel like a decisive leap forward. Here's an overview of 26 hidden iOS 26 tricks that demonstrate how much more the iPhone can do when you pay attention to the little details.

New sound and audio features

Apple has added eight new background sounds, including "Babble," "Steam," "Airplane," "Boat," "Bus," "Train," "Rain on Roof," and "Quiet Night." These can be enabled via Control Center or Accessibility. Sounds & Haptics also includes a new setting called "Reduce Loud Sounds," which smooths out extreme volume fluctuations and makes listening more pleasant. The Podcasts app has also received an upgrade with "Enhance Dialogue." Voices are isolated, making content clearer and more understandable, especially in interviews or true crime formats.

News and Communication

In iOS 26, you can finally select and copy specific text in messages instead of having to duplicate entire messages.

  • For faster photo sharing, there's a new option to send low-quality previews before the full-resolution originals arrive—useful for data-limited connections.
  • With the "Callback Reminder" feature, missed calls will no longer go unnoticed. You can set a reminder in the call log to appear in an hour, in the evening, or the next day.
  • Spam and unwanted messages can be automatically filtered out using the filter for unknown senders. They then end up in a separate category, without annoying notifications.
  • Additionally, there's the option to ask unknown callers for their name and the reason for the call. The iPhone accepts the call, transcribes the information, and lets you decide whether to accept or reject it.

Customization and personalization

The icons on the home screen can now be customized to match the iPhone's color. There's a new "Tinted" option in Customize mode.

  • Ringtones can be created directly from the Files app. Simply add an audio file in MP3 or M4A format to instantly set it as a ringtone.
  • The familiar "Reflection" ringtone has been expanded to include six new variations: "Buoyant," "Dreamer," "Pond," "Pop," "Reflected," and "Surge." There's also a new "Little Bird" tone.

Camera and photos

iOS 26 allows you to use AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, or Pro 3 as wireless microphones for video recording. The camera controls in Control Center let you select the input source. Furthermore, you can use AirPods to take photos and videos using gestures. To do this, enable "Camera Remote" in the AirPods settings. A new notification alerts you when the camera lens is dirty and needs cleaning—a feature designed to ensure image quality.

Safari and system functions

The Safari layout can be switched back to the familiar iOS 18 layout. In addition to the new compact view, "Bottom" and "Top" are available as classic options. Widgets on the lock screen can now be positioned more flexibly. They can be moved to the bottom of the screen, making them easier to use with one hand. For the first time, the remaining loading time is displayed while a charging process is in progress. This feature estimates how many minutes are left until 100 minutes are reached.

Memories and organization

The action button on newer iPhones can be used for quick reminders in iOS 26. Instead of opening the app, a popup appears with all the necessary input fields.

  • Time zones can be set manually for reminders – either globally in the settings or individually for each reminder.
  • Apple Music now offers playlist folders, which provide more structure to your music collection. Playlists can be easily moved using drag and drop.

Gaming and Entertainment

The Games app has been restructured and displays all the titles you've ever played, including achievements, on the "Library" tab. Filters make sorting easier. In Game Mode, there's an overlay that provides access to leaderboards, invitations, and game settings – directly from the Control Center.

Wallet, cards and security

The Wallet app now also supports physical card data, which previously could only be managed in third-party apps. In addition to the name, number, and security code, expiration dates can also be stored.

  • Apple Maps recently introduced the "Visited Places" feature. It provides an overview of past locations. Those seeking more privacy can disable the feature in the settings. (Not available in all regions.)
  • FaceTime has been enhanced with safety features. If the system detects nudity, it automatically pauses the video transmission and displays a warning. Parents can also enable communication safety in Screen Time.
