The iOS 26 beta is available and is aimed at anyone who wants to try out new features before the official release. Installation has become much easier. In this article, you'll find complete instructions on how to install the iOS 26 beta on your device. You'll also learn what to consider before installing, and much more.
Beta versions are test versions. They can contain bugs, cause apps to crash, or reduce battery life. If you install the iOS 26 beta, don't do it on your primary device. And make a backup beforehand so you can roll back to a stable version in case of emergency. While the beta is officially intended for developers, it can also be installed by other users with a valid Apple account.
Preparations before installation
Before you start installing the iOS 26 beta, you should clarify a few points:
- Back up your iPhone or iPad using Finder (macOS) or iTunes (Windows). This way, you can revert to iOS 18 later if needed.
- Sign in with your Apple account at developer.apple.com . This is free, but necessary to enable the beta feature in Settings.
- Check if your device is running iOS 16.4 or later. Only with this version will the beta update menu item appear.
How to install the iOS 26 beta
If the requirements are met, you can install the beta version directly via the Settings app:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- Go to “General” and then “Software Update”
- Tap "Beta Updates." This option only appears if your device and Apple account are correctly set up.
- Select “iOS 26 Developer Beta” from the list
- If you want, you can select a different account via “Apple Account” in the menu below
- Go back and tap “Download and install”
Once the update is downloaded, your device will restart and iOS 26 Beta will be installed. You no longer need a computer or a separate beta profile.
If the beta is not displayed
You may not see the "Beta Updates" option. If so, try the following:
- Close the Settings app completely and open it again
- Check if at least iOS 16.4 is installed and update the device if necessary
- Sign in again at developer.apple.com with your Apple account and restart the device
What you should consider after installation
The iOS 26 beta is updated regularly, so after installation, you should continue to check for software updates for stability improvements and bug fixes. Keep in mind that this is a pre-release version and isn't yet intended for everyday use. Bugs and limitations are normal.
