Following the WWDC 2025 keynote, Apple released the first beta version of iOS 26, as expected. iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26 are also now available to registered developers through the Apple Developer Program. Public beta program participants are expected to follow next month.
This year's software generation not only brings new features, but also a striking name change: Instead of iOS 19, Apple is jumping directly to iOS 26 – as is the case with its other systems. The number 26 refers to the year in which these systems will primarily be used. Even though the release begins in 2025, the naming is based on the following year – similar to car models. Apple wants to provide more clarity, especially when multiple devices with different versions are in use.
iOS 26 & Co.: Beta launch for developers – Public Beta follows
The first beta of iOS 26 is now available for download and installation by registered developers. As usual, registration in the Apple Developer Program is required. The public testing phase is expected to begin in the coming weeks—Apple typically follows a fixed schedule.
New systems, new scheme: The Apple betas are here
With the launch of the first beta versions, the next major testing phase begins for Apple users. Even though the final release won't happen until fall, you can already try out the new systems on a second device (recommended). With iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26, Apple is using a consistent year numbering system to provide more clarity – especially for users with multiple devices. As every year, we'll be reporting in detail on all the new features and changes. Throughout the summer, we'll provide you with comprehensive insights, practical tips, and comprehensive summaries of the new features – so that all aspects are covered by the official release in fall.
