The iPhone Fold is one of the most exciting Apple devices of the coming years. There has long been speculation that Apple would develop a foldable iPhone. New reports now provide more concrete information about possible storage options, RAM configuration, and expected prices.
Current information suggests that Apple is planning a particularly high-end device that combines a smartphone and a tablet. At the same time, the iPhone Fold could be significantly more expensive than previous iPhone models.
Foldable smartphones have become an integral part of the premium smartphone market. Several manufacturers have already released devices that can be unfolded from a smartphone into a larger, tablet-like device. Apple has so far taken its time and has not yet followed this trend.
The iPhone Fold is expected to be released in a so-called book-like format. When closed, it should function like a regular iPhone. When unfolded, the display is expected to be roughly the size of an iPad mini. New leaks now provide the first concrete information about storage, pricing, and hardware.
Three storage options for the iPhone Fold
According to Instant Digital, a leaker active on the Chinese platform Weibo, Apple plans to offer the iPhone Fold with three storage options. The device is said to be available with 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB of storage.
Approximate prices were also mentioned. The 256 GB version is expected to cost around $2,320, while the 512 GB version could cost around $2,610. The 1 TB model is expected to cost around $2,900.
However, these prices are based on conversions from Chinese yuan to US dollars and should therefore only be considered a rough guide.
For comparison: The iPhone 17 Pro is currently also offered with 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB of storage. The larger iPhone 17 Pro Max additionally has a 2 TB version, which costs around $1,999.
The starting price could be significantly higher
Previous reports had already suggested that Apple might position the foldable iPhone between $1,800 and $2,500. This would make it almost twice as expensive as an iPhone 17 Pro.
However, more recent rumors suggest that the price could be closer to the upper end of this range. The leaked prices for the individual storage tiers support this assessment.
12 GB of RAM are expected to come from Samsung
In addition to the storage options, there is also information about the RAM configuration. Reports indicate that the iPhone Fold will be equipped with 12 GB of RAM.
The RAM is expected to be supplied primarily by Samsung. According to the Korean media company The Bell, Samsung is slated to begin delivering the DRAM modules as early as the second quarter of this year to ensure Apple's production schedule can be met.
This is presumably LPDDR5X memory, which is also used in the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 Pro.
Rising storage prices due to AI boom
The price of modern memory chips has risen sharply recently. A 12 GB LPDDR5X module cost around US$30 at the beginning of 2025. At the beginning of this year, reports indicate the price is already around US$70.
The reason for this is the rising global demand for memory for AI servers. The expansion of large data centers for artificial intelligence is driving a sharp increase in the need for DRAM. Samsung was therefore able to negotiate higher prices for memory deliveries to Apple.
Other storage suppliers
Apple typically uses multiple suppliers simultaneously to mitigate supply chain risks. Despite its strong partnership with Samsung, SK hynix and Micron are also reported to have received DRAM orders from Apple.
However, these companies are not expected to be more strongly integrated into the supply chain until a later date.
Design and concept of the iPhone Fold
Reports indicate that the iPhone Fold will be book-style. When closed, it will look like a classic iPhone. When unfolded, the display is expected to be roughly the size of an iPad mini.
Apple is said to have deliberately opted for a wider display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. This format is very similar to the iPad and is particularly well-suited for apps, videos, and multitasking.
Possible market launch
According to recent reports, Apple could unveil its first foldable iPhone in September of this year. The device is expected to be presented alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
This would mark Apple's first official entry into the foldable smartphone market.
iPhone Fold: Storage, RAM and price at a glance
The latest leaks provide a clearer picture of the iPhone Fold. The device is expected to be released with 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB of storage and presumably 12 GB of RAM. The RAM is expected to be primarily supplied by Samsung, while SK Hynix and Micron could also be involved in the supply chain later on.
With potential prices exceeding $2,300, the iPhone Fold would be significantly more expensive than previous iPhones. Combined with its foldable book design and a 4:3 display reminiscent of an iPad, the device could represent a new category between smartphones and tablets. (Image: Shutterstock / Dontree_M)
