iPhone 20: Largest iPhone display ever being tested

For the iPhone's 20th anniversary, Apple is apparently testing what will be the largest display ever used in an iPhone. The panel measures around seven inches – but whether it will go into production and in which model is still completely unknown.

With just over a year to go before the big anniversary, reports are mounting about how radically Apple plans to redesign the 2027 iPhone. The latest clue from the supply chain concerns the screen size: Apple is reportedly testing a panel with a diagonal of around 6.96 inches, which would be rounded up to a clean seven inches for marketing purposes. This report fits into the growing picture of the anniversary model that Apple has been gradually revealing for months.

A new size record – with a small jump

The information comes from the Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, which cites sources within the supply chain. According to them, the display is currently being tested, and its aspect ratio is said to match that of the current iPhone 17 Pro Max.

While the claim that it's the largest iPhone display ever is technically correct, the actual increase is minimal. The iPhone 17 Pro Max already measures 6.9 inches, so the difference would be only around 0.06 inches. The last significant increase in the Pro displays wasn't that long ago anyway: with the iPhone 16 Pro, the diagonal grew from 6.1 to 6.3 inches in 2024, and with the Pro Max from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. This year's iPhone 18 Pro, however, is expected to retain the dimensions of the 17 Pro.

A larger screen would still fit the design goal for 2027. Apple reportedly wants to bring the iPhone closer to the concept of a single glass surface, with a nearly bezel-less display curved on all four sides. If the bezels disappear, more screen space can be accommodated within the same case size – the record size would then be less a question of bulkier dimensions than a consequence of the bezel-less design.

For which model? The name question is still open

Whether the panel will even go into mass production is still unclear – and if so, in which device. Digital Chat Station speculates it will be the upcoming Pro Max model, but explicitly states that this is unconfirmed. This is further complicated by the fact that even the name of the anniversary model is unknown. Several possibilities are circulating: a standalone special edition in the tradition of the iPhone X, a direct jump from the 18 series to the 20 series, or simply the next Pro models under the name iPhone 19 Pro. Recently, there have been strong indications that Apple will integrate the anniversary design into the regular Pro models, rather than releasing a separate device.

How reliable is the report?

Despite the excitement, caution is advised. Apple tests numerous components during development, most of which never make it into a production product. Therefore, a prototype in the supply chain is no guarantee of a finished product. While Digital Chat Station is considered a relatively accurate indicator, the specific model assignment remains speculation for now. The only certainty so far is that such a display size would fit well with Apple's stated design goals.

Apple's anniversary iPhone is slowly taking shape

With each leak, it becomes clearer what Apple is aiming for in 2027: an iPhone defined primarily by its display, featuring bezel-less design, curved glass, and now potentially a new record size. The final screen size and the device's name will likely only become clearer over the course of next year. (Image: Shutterstock / DenPhotos)
