iPhone 20: Factory apparently ready for glass design

A supplier has reportedly already retooled its production line for the 20th anniversary iPhone model. The preferred option is said to be a glass casing. This is noteworthy because the same source argued just two months ago why Apple couldn't do exactly that.

A leaker on Weibo has revealed a detail from the supply chain: the production facility responsible for the iPhone 20 has already been retooled and is now awaiting production. A return to glass is reportedly the preferred approach, with manufacturing quality expected to be roughly on par with the first-generation iPhone Air. The specific supplier remains undisclosed. This marks the first time the image of the 2027 anniversary model has been pieced together, revealing a component from production rather than design.

What the leak specifically claims

The statement is deliberately worded cautiously: it speaks of a "preferred approach," not a final decision. It is known that Lens Technology manufactures the cover glass for iPhones and previously acquired metal frame and glass back panel production facilities from supplier Catcher Technology – a company equipped for both components would be the obvious choice for a material change. However, this association has not been confirmed.

This aligns with previous reports from Bloomberg: a predominantly glass, curved iPhone without any notch in the display, where the glass wraps around all sides of the device. The market launch is expected in September 2027.

The iPhone has long had a glass back

At this point, a clarification is needed, one that is often overlooked in reporting. Speaking of a "return to glass" is misleading – iPhones have had a glass back since the iPhone 8, simply because wireless charging doesn't work through metal. What would be new isn't the back, but the frame: instead of an aluminum or titanium band all around, the glass itself would wrap around the edges, connecting the front and back.

Whether a load-bearing metal structure still exists beneath this glass casing is unclear. Previous descriptions refer to a "predominantly" glass device, not a completely glass one. A smartphone without any internal reinforcement would also be technically difficult to build and maintain.

The contradiction to one's own argument

The leak becomes interesting in retrospect. In May, the same source contradicted a report that Apple was researching an improved titanium alloy or liquid metal for future Pro models, dampening expectations of titanium's return with a technical argument: aluminum is the only viable option for the foreseeable future because the heat from the AI processing on the device needs to be dissipated. Fittingly, Apple is sticking with the aluminum finish for the iPhone 18 Pro.

The answer lies in a statement the same leaker added in early July: aluminum midframes would continue to be used in straight-edged phones for a long time to come. The anniversary model is precisely the opposite – a prototype with a fully curved display is being tested for 2027. The distinction seems like splitting hairs, but it makes sense: a device with curved edges requires a different housing design than one with flat sides.

The physical question remains, however. Glass conducts heat orders of magnitude less efficiently than aluminum. If the thermal stress caused by on-device AI was indeed the decisive argument for metal, then Apple must find compensation elsewhere for a glass casing – through an internal metal structure, vapor chamber cooling, or a more energy-efficient chip. No one has explained this yet.

From the renovated hall to the finished iPhone

The headline makes it sound like production is imminent, but it isn't. Apple's iPhone manufacturing typically only reaches full capacity a few weeks before the sales launch – test production for the iPhone 17 began in June, mass production was scheduled for August, and the device arrived in September. So, for a model slated for fall 2027, there's still well over a year and several decision points between the conversion of a factory and the first finished device.

A converted machine awaiting the start of production primarily demonstrates one thing: that Apple is taking the option seriously enough to have suppliers pay for it. It does not prove that the final device will look like this.

What a glass body in the hand means

For everyday use, the main question is one of robustness. A casing whose load-bearing outer surface is made entirely of glass no longer has a metal edge to cushion a fall onto its corner. This is precisely where smartphones most often break. The fact that Apple is simultaneously working on an edge-to-edge, fully curved display doesn't make things any easier – one report has already warned of potential image distortion at the curved edges.

An anniversary model can make a statement, and a continuous glass body would undoubtedly do that. Whether you'd want to leave the house without a case afterward is another question – and it will likely determine whether the design is remembered as a masterpiece or merely a design exercise.

Much remains uncertain until 2027

The iPhone 20 is currently expected in fall 2027, following the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2. Apple has several development cycles until then to balance materials, cooling, and manufacturability. Weibo leaks from the supply chain are often accurate regarding components and manufacturing details, but significantly less so when it comes to final design decisions—especially when, as explicitly admitted here, the decision hasn't even been made yet.
