iOS 27 marks a comprehensive shift in how artificial intelligence is handled on Apple devices. At its core is a newly developed Siri App, designed to offer significantly more features than its predecessor. This is complemented by an "Extensions" feature, enabling deeper integration of third-party AI for the first time.
The current information stems from a report by Mark Gurman, who regularly reports on internal developments at Apple in his "Power On" newsletter. His assessments are considered well-founded and are often based on sources close to the company.
In addition to iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27 are also expected to benefit from these new features. The focus is on a unified AI strategy across all platforms.
New Siri App in iOS 27
A key element of iOS 27 is a completely new Siri App. This app is designed to support both text and voice interactions, making it significantly more flexible than the previous Siri integration.
Additionally, past conversations with Siri are expected to be stored and accessible within the App. This will create a more context-based user experience, reminiscent of familiar AI applications such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude.
Extensions function as a key innovation
Perhaps the most important new feature in iOS 27 is the introduction of so-called "extensions." These are extensions that allow AI agents from installed Apps to interact directly with Siri and other system functions. According to internal notes, these extensions can be used with:
- Siri herself
- the new Siri App
- additional functions on the device
cooperate.
This transforms Siri from an isolated assistant into an open platform that integrates external services.
AI integration via third-party providers
ChatGPT integration has been available since iOS 18.2. This capability is expected to be significantly expanded with iOS 27.
The extensions feature will allow for the integration of additional chatbots and AI services from third-party providers in the future. This means that multiple AI systems can be used simultaneously and controlled via Siri.
Dedicated extensions section in the App Store
Another component of iOS 27 is a new section in the App Store specifically designed for extensions.
This area is intended to serve as a marketplace for third-party AI integrations. Developers can offer their extensions there, while users can selectively install them.
This suggests a strategic opening of the Apple ecosystem in the field of artificial intelligence.
Siri overhaul in iOS 27
In addition to the new features, Siri itself will undergo a comprehensive overhaul. According to the report, several changes are planned:
- A redesigned user interface
- Possible integration of the Dynamic Island
- A system-wide "Ask Siri" button within Apple Apps
- A "Write with Siri" button above the keyboard
These adjustments aim to integrate Siri more strongly into everyday life and the operation of the system.
Availability and possible restrictions
It is not yet definitively clear whether all devices that support iOS 27 will also have access to the new Siri App.
It is possible that certain features are tied to newer hardware, such as devices like the iPhone 15 Pro or newer models with support for Apple Intelligence.
The first developer beta of iOS 27 is expected to be released in June. The final version is expected to be released in September, as usual.
iOS 27 marks the beginning of a new AI era at Apple
iOS 27 suggests a fundamental realignment of Apple's AI strategy. The combination of a new Siri App, an extensions system, and a dedicated AI marketplace in the App Store demonstrates Apple's increased focus on openness and integration.
By integrating external AI services and through deeper system integration, Siri could play a significantly more central role in the operating system in the future. If the report is confirmed, iOS 27 will be one of the most comprehensive updates in recent years. (Image: Shutterstock / Mamun_Sheikh)
