According to a recent report, Apple is preparing a major overhaul of Siri. With the release of iOS 27 on June 8th, a standalone Siri app could be launched for the first time. This would significantly move the voice assistant away from its current role and towards becoming more of an AI chatbot.
While Apple has regularly updated Siri in recent years, fundamental changes have been lacking. Meanwhile, other providers have developed their AI systems much faster. Apple is responding with a new strategy that places artificial intelligence more prominently at the forefront.
A key component is the collaboration with Google. Apple has reached an agreement to use Google's Gemini AI models for future Siri and Apple Intelligence features. These features were first presented at WWDC 2024, but have not yet been fully released.
Siri as a standalone app
A key component of Apple's plans is a standalone Siri app. According to Bloomberg, this is currently being tested on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The goal is to offer Siri not just as a background assistant, but as an active application with its own user interface.
The new app is designed to function similarly to familiar AI chat apps. Instead of individual voice commands, the focus is on continuous conversation. This makes the interaction feel more structured and closer to traditional messaging apps.
Delayed AI functions and interim status
Apple had originally planned to release its so-called Personal Intelligence features earlier. However, these were postponed beyond the iOS 18 release cycle.
iOS 26.4 has now been officially released. It is expected that the first features based on Gemini AI will be introduced with iOS 26.5. A more comprehensive implementation is likely to follow with iOS 27.
The current report is seen as an indication that Apple has significantly advanced its work on the new Siri experience and that a presentation in June is realistic.
New Siri design
In addition to functional changes, Apple is also working on a redesigned Siri interface. The current look is essentially based on iOS 18 and was only slightly modified up to iOS 26.
The new design, which is currently being tested, brings several specific adjustments:
- Siri is displayed at the top of the screen within the Dynamic Island that Apple introduced in 2022.
- After activation, the prompt "Search or ask" appears.„
- While a request is being processed, a glowing Siri icon is displayed along with a pill-shaped "Searching" message.
- Once results are available, the surface expands to a larger, transparent window in the so-called liquid glass design.
- This interface can be pulled down to start an ongoing conversation.
These changes show that Apple wants to make the use of Siri more visual and interactive.
New features and system integration
In addition to the standalone app, Apple is planning a deeper integration of Siri into the operating system. Several new features will be tested:
- A so-called "Ask Siri" switch is intended to simplify system-wide access to the assistant.
- With "Write with Siri," Apple is working on a feature that can assist with writing and generate content.
These approaches suggest that Siri will not only be used for simple queries in the future, but will also take on productive tasks.
Apple's Siri redesign is taking shape
With iOS 27 and macOS 27, Apple is undergoing a fundamental redesign of Siri. The planned standalone app, the integration of Gemini AI, and the new design clearly demonstrate Apple's intention to significantly expand the assistant.
These developments come at a time when artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role. Should Apple implement the announced features as planned, Siri could become a genuine alternative to other AI chatbots for the first time. (Image: Mojahid_Mottakin / DepositPhotos.com)
